Papua New Guinea : Twelve people, including an Australian, were killed when a light plane crashed just short of a landing strip in remote Papua New Guinea, reports said on Thursday.
The aircraft was flying in the rugged west of the Pacific nation on Wednesday afternoon when its engine failed mid-air, sending it into a nose-dive, the PNG Broadcasting Corporation said.
It crashed into a swamp close to Kiunga airstrip. “Yesterday we encountered a tragedy, a plane crash,” Kiunga’s police commander Joe Puri told local media. “A small plane that arrived from Oksapmin just before landing crashed into the swamp, with all the passengers, including the pilot, dead.”
The broadcaster said three children were among those killed while Australian media said the Australian on board was the pilot. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed one of its nationals was on the Sunbird Aviation flight and that it crashed on approach to Kiunga.
“We continue to work closely with Papua New Guinea authorities,” a department spokesman told AFP, without confirming whether or not he was the pilot. “Our thoughts are with the passengers and crew of the aircraft and their families. Due to privacy obligations, we are unable to provide further information.”

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro commuters will henceforth not be allowed to cover their faces using surgical masks or mufflers even as the security-hold area at close to two dozen stations has been expanded in view of the new security drills being deployed to more effectively guard the rapid rail network.
In the wake of a daring heist at the Rajinder Place station yesterday where two unidentified men stormed the control room and looted around Rs 12 lakh cash, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has issued a set of fresh instructions dis-allowing covering of the face by travellers using any kind of cloth or cover like surgical masks, mufflers, ‘dupatta’ or anti-pollution caps.
The two men, also captured on the CCTV, were wearing masks during their entry and exit at the station.
“Only terminally ill or serious patients will be allowed to cover their faces using a mask or cover. Everyone else who uses a cover for a variety of reasons like to beat heat, pollution or for fear of contracting infection will have to remove the face cover while getting frisked.
“The measure was there in place and suspicious people were asked to remove it during frisking but it will now be strictly implemented in all cases. This to ensure that all faces are seen by security personnel and are also captured on CCTV cameras. In case there is an incident, everyone should be identifiable,” officials said.
At close to two dozen stations on the Yellow line (HUDA City Centre-Jahangirpuri) and Blue line (Dwarka Sector 21-Noida City Centre/Vaishali), the CISF has expanded its security apparatus and brought under control large areas under its armed cover.
The force has moved its door-frame metal detectors and baggage X-ray machines closer towards the entry gate which entails passengers being frisked and their luggage being scanned much ahead as compared to the existing protocol.
A senior CISF official said only the security-hold area has been expanded and brought under the view of the security personnel and this measure will not add to any additional hassles or time taken during frisking.
“The measure has been taken keeping in mind the overall security of Metro stations. While close to 24 stations are being brought under the new security mechanism in the first go, the CISF will initiate these at more and more stations as and when the space is obtained,” they said.
The new area domination at the stations, they said, has been executed keeping in mind a last year’s incident when a man sneaked in his luggage through the low height glass partition and then used a gun kept therein to shoot himself at the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro station.
Officials said that after a coordinated analysis carried out by CISF, Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi Police and Intelligence Bureau, it was decided to cover the station area right from where the tokens are sold to commuters and from where the “paid and un-paid” area get separated by a glass wall, at most of the about 150 stations of Delhi Metro in National Capital Region (NCR).
At a number of stations, the height of the glass partition is also gradually being increased to about 6 feet so that no exchange of goods take place even as the force is deploying its personnel in ‘mufti’ as spotters to keep an eye on miscreants active in these areas.
Close to 5,000 CISF men and women are deployed to secure the stations operational in the national capital and its neighbouring cities of Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaon.
About 26 lakh people use the rapid rail network everyday to travel to their destinations in these areas and security drills are constantly changed keeping in the mind the dynamics of the network.

Mumbai, Apr 12, 2016 : The Bombay High Court today asked the BCCI whether it could shift IPL matches out of Pune in view of the grim water crisis in Maharashtra even as the cricket board said it would procure treated sewage water for maintenance of pitches in Mumbai and Pune.
A bench of Justices V M Kanade and M S Karnik, hearing a PIL by NGO Loksatta Movement challenging use of large quantities of water in stadiums at a time when the state was reeling under severe drought conditions, asked the BCCI to respond to this tomorrow.
The judges also asked the board whether it can contribute to the Chief Minister’s drought relief fund.
As the BCCI said it had supplied 40 lakh litres of water to stadiums per day for IPL tournaments so far, the judges asked whether it was ready to supply the same quantity to water-starved villages in and around Pune.
During the hearing, the Cricket Board counsel Rafiq Dada informed the bench that BCCI had tied up with Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) to procure treated sewage water for IPL matches to be played in Mumbai and Pune.
Nine Indian Premier League (IPL) matches have been planned in Pune and eight in Mumbai, where the opneing match was held on April 9 at Wankhede stadium here, the BCCI’s counsel told the court.
Three matches are slated to be held in Nagpur, and IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab has agreed to shift them to Mohali or elsewhere if the HC tells it, he said.
Everyday, 7-8 tankers of treated sewage water would be supplied to the stadiums, Dada said, adding use of treated sewage water should be encouraged because after treating it is released into the sea and goes wasted now, he said.
“In this case, instead of discharging treated sewage water into the sea, we are using it in the stadiums,” the BCCI counsel said.
The bench also asked RWITC to give an undertaking whether it would supply treated sewage water for the ground maintenance in Pune.
The HC had lambasted the BCCI during the last hearing on the use of huge quantities of water for the pitches.
The BCCI Counsel said that after the High Court pulled up the cricket Board for using water in stadiums it has taken the issue very seriously.
In another development, Maharashtra acting Advocate General Rohit Dev informed the court of the immediate and long term measures the Government would adopt to meet the drought situation.
New Delhi, Apr 12 ,2016 : India’s exports are estimated to throw up a conservative figure of USD 250-260 billion for the last financial year due to global demand slowdown, a top government official said today.
The merchandise exports had totalled USD 310.5 billion in 2014-15.
But the situation may improve this year on account of gradual “hardening” of commodity and oil prices, the official said, adding that “the measures announced by the government would show a positive impact on exports from this year”.
In 2015, the government has announced enhanced duty drawbacks under the Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) and 3 per cent interest subsidy scheme.
Way back in 2008-09, the country’s out-bound shipments were less than USD 270 billion — around USD 210 billion, to be precise — said exporters body Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).
Falling for the 15th month in a row, exports tumbled 5.66 per cent in February to USD 20.73 billion.
For April-February 2016, cumulative exports declined 16.73 per cent to USD 238.41 billion as against USD 286.3 billion in April-February of 2014-15.

Kolkata, Apr 12 ,2016 : Controversial Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was today removed from his post by the Election Commission following complaints against him by major opposition political parties in poll-bound West Bengal.
“The Kolkata Police Commissioner is removed from his post. ADG (CID) Soumen Mitra will replace him,” an EC source said.
EC sources had earlier said that the issue was under its consideration amid demands by opposition parties in the state for removal of Kumar.
Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena had said a decision of the issue would be conveyed to the media by the Commission “at an appropriate time.”
The poll panel today wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee, asking him to act on this issue.
The ADG (CID) Soumen Mitra has been asked to take over as the new Commissioner of Police in Kolkata Police, EC sources said.
Confirming the development, state Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee told PTI, “Yes, Rajeev Kumar is being replaced by the ADG (CID) Soumen Mitra.”
The BJP and Congress had recently moved the EC seeking removal of Kumar alleging that he was close to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and accused him of “snooping” on opposition leaders, bureaucrats and journalists.
The BJP had complained to the EC after an alleged failed sting operation against the party’s national secretary and former state president Rahul Sinha late last month. Two Kolkata Police personnel had allegedly tried to bribe Sinha in return for help to smuggle out cows to Bangladesh.
Sinha had alleged that it was a conspiracy by the TMC government to trap BJP leaders in the sting operation before the Assembly polls and demanded a CBI probe.
Kumar was appointed as Kolkata Police Commissioner in January.
