Sept 30,2026: The Indian Coast Guard, in a joint operation with the Gujarat ATS, has seized 526 kg of methamphetamine and heroin valued at more than ₹3,000 crore from an Iranian boat in the Arabian Sea, officials said on Wednesday (September 30, 2026).
Five Pakistani nationals operating the vessel were also detained in the operation carried out near Lakshadweep on September 25, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
Based on intelligence inputs, Coast Guard assets carried out sea-air surveillance and tracked the suspicious dhow before launching a hot pursuit and boarding it west of Lakshadweep, it said.
The seized contraband comprised high-grade methamphetamine and heroin, the Coast Guard said.
The vessel, its crew and the seized drugs were brought to Mumbai under armed escort for joint interrogation and further legal proceedings, it said.
The operation was conducted in coordination with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad.
The State ATS also confirmed the apprehension of five Pakistani nationals. It is scheduled to brief the media on the operation later in the day.
The seizure comes as security agencies step up efforts to curb transnational drug trafficking through the maritime route.
The Coast Guard said the operation demonstrated its surveillance and maritime interdiction capabilities and its commitment to preventing illicit activities in India’s maritime zones.
The seizure would help disrupt the financial network of international drug syndicates and prevent synthetic drugs from reaching the mainland, it added.
‘Determined to shiled youth’
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the joint operation and said that the “Modi government is determined to shield its youth from the scourge of drugs”. In a post on X, Mr. Shah lauded the Coast Guard, Gujarat ATS, and central agencies for ‘upholding a stellar example of coordination and cooperation’.
July 30,2026: A US man who is already serving 25 years in prison for attempting to kill Sir Salman Rushdie has been convicted of additional charges, including providing material support to a terrorist group.
Hadi Matar was convicted in a New York federal court on Wednesday of providing assistance to Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed faction which is designated as a terrorist group by the US, UK and many other countries.
Prosecutors argued that Matar had been motivated by a fatwa, a religious edict, issued by Iran’s religious leader in 1989 for Sir Salman’s death.
The award-winning author testified during the trial, describing the attack and crediting a firefighter with saving his life by providing medical care.
The jury convicted Matar of engaging in an act of transnational terrorism and providing material support to Hezbollah.
During the trial in the New York city of Buffalo, prosecutors argued that he had been motivated by a 2006 speech by the then-leader of Hezbollah, calling for the fatwa against Sir Salman to be enforced, and that he had plotted the attack for two years.
Defence attorneys argued that Matar’s attack had not been motivated by terrorism, and questioned the author about whether he should have expected a backlash to his controversial 1988 novel The Satanic Verses.
“I don’t believe the book is on trial,” Sir Salman responded. “Somebody else is on trial.”
Matar is already serving a 25-year sentence after being convicted of attempted murder by a state court in 2025. He could now face life in prison in the federal conviction.
Sir Salman’s novel, inspired by the life of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, sparked outrage among some Muslims, who considered its content to be blasphemous.
He faced countless death threats and was forced into hiding for nine years after Iran’s religious leader issued the fatwa.
The British-Indian novelist later detailed his experience and long road to recovery in a memoir called Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder.
Last year, he released his first fiction in years, titled The Eleventh Hour.
Mali’s Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara has been killed in coordinated attacks on military sites nationwide, a government spokesperson has confirmed.
Camara was killed when assailants targeted his house, the spokesperson, Issa Ousmane Coulibaly, said in a statement on Sunday.
Camara’s residence in the garrison town of Kati came under assault on Saturday during simultaneous attacks by an al-Qaeda affiliate and Tuareg rebels.
Camara was a central figure in the military government that seized power after back-to-back coups in 2020 and 2021.
Haque said attackers carried out a suicide car bomb assault on Camara’s residence in Kati, a heavily fortified military town about 15km (9 miles) northwest of the capital, Bamako, where Interim President Assimi Goita also lives.
Camara’s second wife and two of his grandchildren were also killed in the attack on his home, the AFP news agency reported.
Gunmen attacked several other locations across Mali, including Bamako, as well as Gao and Kidal in the north and the central city of Sevare.
Colombo, Feb 25,2026: Sri Lanka’s criminal investigators on Wednesday arrested the country’s former intelligence chief in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed 279 people, including 45 foreigners.
Police said retired Major General Suresh Sallay was taken into custody at dawn in a suburb of Colombo, marking the most high-profile arrest in the long-running investigation, The local media reported.
There have been accusations that Sri Lanka’s former government, led by strongman president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, obstructed the investigation into the country’s deadliest terrorist attack, amid claims that they may have exploited the crisis to aid their return to power.
The Rajapaksa family had dominated Sri Lankan politics for nearly a decade from 2005. While they were credited with ending the nation’s 26-year civil war, their tenure was also marked by authoritarian tactics, including the alleged use of “death squads” to silence critics and journalists.
Mahinda Rajapaksa was removed from office in 2015 following allegations of corruption, but the family sought a political comeback in 2019.
Sallay was appointed head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) in 2019 after Gotabaya Rajapaksa became president, has been accused of involvement in the coordinated suicide bombings, a charge he denied.
On Easter Sunday 2019, six suicide bombers struck churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka, killing 269 people, including eight British tourists.
SEOUL, Jan 21,2026: A South Korean court jailed former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo for 23 years on Wednesday, on charges that included insurrection relating to ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law in December 2024.
Han, 76, is the first former cabinet minister to be handed a ruling by a court on criminal charges directly related to martial law, which legal experts have said could prove a bellwether for other trials.
The Seoul Central District Court found Han guilty because he was instrumental in setting up the outward appearance of a cabinet meeting that facilitated the declaration, a judge said, a move he described as a “top-down insurrection”.
Han also discussed plans to block the function of major institutions such as parliament as part of the insurrection, the judge added.
“The defendant was a prime minister who had been indirectly given democratic legitimacy and responsibility … Nevertheless, the defendant chose to turn a blind eye … and participate as a member of the December 3 insurrection,” the judge said.
“As a result, South Korea was in danger of returning to the dark past when the basic rights and liberal democratic order of the people were violated, potentially preventing them from escaping … dictatorship for a long time.”
The court found Han guilty of “engaging in (the) key action of insurrection”, as well as on related charges of perjury and falsifying an official document.
“I will humbly follow the judge’s decision,” Han, clad in a suit and green tie, said after the ruling.
He had denied wrongdoing on all charges except perjury, saying in November that while he regretted not being able to stop Yoon from declaring martial law, he “never agreed to it or tried to help”.
In an unusual instance in South Korean court proceedings, the 23-year term exceeded a sentence of 15 years sought by prosecutors in November.
Han was detained by the court immediately after the ruling, which can be appealed. Han’s lawyer said it would be taken to the Supreme Court.
HELD SENIOR POSTS UNDER FIVE PRESIDENTS
Han is an experienced technocrat who served in senior posts under five presidents. He became acting president after Yoon was impeached, before his own impeachment on accusations of having aided Yoon in the martial law declaration.
The Constitutional Court overturned Han’s impeachment, restoring his powers to serve as leader before he resigned from the post to run in a snap election in June. He ended his bid for the presidency following rifts among conservatives.
“I don’t know whether this elderly man (Han)… meant to devote himself to the people of South Korea in his own way, but the outcome wasn’t good,” said another commuter, 79-year-old Kim In-sik.
Yoon, who faces eight separate trials, was handed a five-year jail term last week for charges that included obstructing attempts to arrest him following martial law. He has appealed.
Yoon faces another ruling on February 19 on the most serious charge of “masterminding an insurrection”.
Prosecutors have sought the death penalty in that case, though South Korea has had no execution since 1997.
Mumbai July 31,2025: Seventeen years after a bomb blast rattled Malegaon, a Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) today acquitted all the seven accused including former BJP MP Paragya Singh Thakur and others who stood trial in the political sensitive terrorism case.
BJP leader and former MP Pragya Singh Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi all stand acquitted.
Special Judge AK Lahoti, who presides over the NIA court, announced the acquittals.
“Terror has no religion because no religion can advocate violence,” the special NIA court judge, AK Lahoti, said.
Advocate Ranjit Nair said, “I was representing accused number 11 Sudhakar Chaturvedi. Court has acquitted him. The Court has observed that prosecution cannot present any proof against accused.”
Briefing the media, Advocate Prakash Salsingikar said, “The court has said that this incident is very bad. However, the loss of victims can’t be fulfilled but the court has asked for compensation to all those people.”
Significant security measures have been implemented around the Sessions Court in South Mumbai ahead of the ruling, with a heavy police presence deployed outside the courthouse complex.
The explosion on the night of September 29, 2008, near Bhikku Chowk in Malegaon, killed six people and injured over a hundred. A low-intensity bmb fitted to a motorcycle detonated near a busy intersection, triggering panic and chaos in the communally sensitive town.
Initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), the case was taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2011. The NIA re-registered the offence and conducted further investigations. Since then, multiple chargesheets and supplementary reports have been filed. The trial began in 2018 after charges were formally framed against seven accused.
Mumbai, July 21,2025: In a judicial verdict that has sent shockwaves through the legal community, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 suspects previously convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, declaring that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to establish their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The judgment, delivered 19 years after the terror attack that claimed over 180 lives and left hundreds injured, was pronounced by a special bench comprising justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak. The bench categorically stated that the evidence presented was insufficient to sustain convictions, observing it was “hard to believe that the accused committed the crime.”
The court quashed both the death sentences awarded to five individuals and life imprisonment terms given to the remaining seven.
The horrific incident occurred on July 11, 2006, when seven coordinated bomb explosions ripped through Mumbai’s suburban railway network during evening rush hour, targeting first-class compartments of Western Railway trains.
The blasts occurred over an 11-minute span (6:24 pm to 6:35 pm) at locations including Khar Road-Santacruz, Bandra-Khar Road, Jogeshwari-Mahim Junction, Mira Road-Bhayander, Matunga-Mahim Junction, and Borivali. Pressure cooker bombs designed to maximize casualties killed 189 people and injured over 700.
Following an extensive investigation by Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), a special MCOCA court convicted all twelve defendants in September 2015. Five – Ehtesham Qutbuddin Siddiqui, Kamal Ansari, Faisal Atta-ur-Rehman Sheikh, Asif Bashir, and Naveed Hussain – received death sentences. Seven others – Muhammad Ali Sheikh, Sohail Sheikh, Zameer Latif-ur-Rehman, Dr. Tanveer, Muzammil Atta-ur-Rehman Sheikh, Majid Shafi, and Sajid Marghub Ansari – were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Tehran, Apr 28,2025:The death toll from a massive explosion at a port in Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan on Saturday has reached 40, and the government has announced one day of national mourning, Iran’s IRIB news agency reported on Sunday.
The explosion and the subsequent fire left more than 1,000 people wounded, of whom 197 were hospitalised, the IRIB quoted Hormozgan’s Governor Mohammad Ashouri Taziani as saying.
The cause of the incident has not been determined yet.
The Iranian government’s spokeswoman, Fatemeh Mohajerani, in a post on social media platform X, said the administration had declared Monday a day of national mourning.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited the port on Sunday to assess the circumstances of the blast, and visited some of the injured, according to a statement from his office.
Hossein Sajedinia, head of the National Disaster Management Organisation, told the IRIB that firefighting teams from five provinces were working to contain the fire, predicting that the blaze would be curbed in a few hours.
He said some of the containers at the port contained flammable materials, such as pitch, and some others had chemicals in them.
Despite the incident, the port’s wharfs have resumed operations and cargo handling, according to the official news agency IRNA.
New Delhi, Apr 23,2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was briefed on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terror attack after he landed in the National Capital early on Wednesday from Jeddah.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other senior officials were present at the meeting. The External Affairs Minister and the Security Advisor briefed PM Modi on the current situation and the attack in detail.
After attending a bilateral meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Modi returned home this morning.
PM Modi has called a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security in the wake of the emergency situation.
The terror attack in Pahalgam began around 2:30 pm on Tuesday. Among the 26 killed was a Navy officer who was married a week ago and an Intelligence Bureau official who was shot dead in front of his wife. The victims included two foreigners – from the UAE and Nepal – and two locals, officials said.
Reports suggested that ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF), a shadow group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group – operatives of which likely crossed over from Kishtwar in Jammu and reached Baisaran through Kokernag in south Kashmir – has claimed responsibility. However, the government has not yet confirmed this.
New Delhi, Apr 9,2025: Tahawwur Rana, one of the masterminds of the deadly 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being extradited to India after he exhausted his legal options in the US, according to news reports.
The Pakistani-Canadian national, 64, was an associate of the Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected his plea against his extradition to India to face trial, news reports said.
Earlier this year too, the US Supreme Court had rejected his plea against his extradition.
He was incarcerated in the US Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, for 14 years. His extradition to India was approved in 2023 by the US Supreme Court.
The extradition of Rana had also been announced by President Donald Trump who had dubbed him “a very evil man”, in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, in February this year.
As per news reports, a multi-agency team from India has gone to the US and all paperwork and legalities are being completed with the US authorities required to facilitate the extradition process.
Rana, who had personally conducted reconnaissance and scouted Mumbai for picking the locations of the terror strikes ahead of the terror attacks, had also directly facilitated fellow jihadi David Coleman Headley—also known as Dawood Gilani—to travel to India using a Pakistani-American passport. The purpose was to identify potential targets for the Mumbai terror attacks being plotted by LeT in coordination with several officers of the Pakistan Army and Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
United Nations, Nov 22,2024: UN humanitarians said on Thursday that evacuation orders and air strikes forced more than 880,000 people from their homes in Lebanon, with more than 500,000 of them fleeing into Syria.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said those remaining in Lebanon face deteriorating food security.
The International Organisation for Migration reported that more than 880,000 people were displaced within the country, including more than 20,000 migrants who have been forced to flee both their homes and workplaces.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that more than 500,000 people left Lebanon for Syria and that more than half of them were children. UNHCR is supporting them, among others, by providing psychosocial support to help them deal with trauma and emotional impact of displacement.
OCHA reminded that civilians must be protected regardless of their choice to stay in their homes or to flee.
The office also said the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) warn that food security in Lebanon is expected to worsen.
“The ongoing escalation of conflict since September 2024 has severely disrupted supply chains, and deepened food insecurity, which now affects more than 1.2 million people,” WFP and FAO said.
“With nearly a quarter of the Lebanese population already suffering from inadequate food consumption, the situation is set to deteriorate further as food prices remain high.”
As an example, OCHA said WFP used 12 convoys to deliver food to more than 65,000 people, mostly in South and Baalbek-Hermel governorates, since September of this year in response to the challenging food security situation.
SYDNEY, Nov 21,2024: Australia’s centre-left government on Thursday introduced a bill in parliament that aims to ban social media for children under 16 and proposed fines of up to A$49.5 million ($32 million) for social media platforms for systemic breaches.
Australia plans to trial an age-verification system that may include biometrics or government identification to enforce a social media age cut-off, some of the toughest controls imposed by any country to date.
The proposals are the highest age limit set by any country, and would have no exemption for parental consent and no exemption for pre-existing accounts.
“This is a landmark reform. We know some kids will find workarounds, but we’re sending a message to social media companies to clean up their act,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement.
The opposition Liberal party plans to support the bill though independents and the Green party have demanded more details on the proposed law, which would impact Meta Platforms’
But Albanese said children will have access to messaging, online gaming, and health and education related services, such as youth mental health support platform Headspace, and Alphabet’s
The Albanese-led Labor government has been arguing excessive use of social media poses risks to physical and mental health of children, in particular the risks to girls from harmful depictions of body image, and misogynist content aimed at boys.
A number of countries have already vowed to curb social media use by children through legislation, but Australia’s policy is one of the most stringent.
France last year proposed a ban on social media for those under 15 but users were able to avoid the ban with parental consent. The United States has for decades required technology companies to seek parental consent to access the data of children under 13.
“For too many young Australians, social media can be harmful. Almost two-thirds of 14 to 17-year-old Australians have viewed extremely harmful content online, including drug abuse, suicide or self-harm,” Communications Minister Michelle Rowland told parliament on Thursday.
The law would force social media platforms, and not parents or young people, to take reasonable steps to ensure the age-verification protections are in place.
The proposed law will contain robust privacy provisions, including requiring platforms to destroy any information collected to safeguard the personal data of users, Rowland said.
“Social media has a social responsibility … that’s why we are making big changes to hold platforms to account for user safety,” Rowland said.
New Delhi, Nov 14,2024: The Central Government has declared Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) along with all its factions, wings and front organisations of Meghalaya as an unlawful association with immediate effect for a period of five years.
The Ministry of Home Affairs through a Gazette Notification dated November 13 said, “The Central Government declares the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), along with all its factions, wings and front organisations as an unlawful association with immediate effect.”
“(The Government) In exercise of the powers conferred by the proviso to sub-section (3) of section 3 of the said Act, hereby directs that this notification shall, subject to any order that may be made under section 4 of the said Act, have immediate effect from the November, 16, 2024 for a period of five years,” the notification said.
The notification said that HNLC along with all its factions, wings and front organisations has been involved in activities which are prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India.
The notification further said that the Government is of the opinion that the HNLC has declared objective for secession of areas in Meghalaya, largely inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribes from India.
The Meghalaya Government had also recommended that HNLC be declared as an unlawful association under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (37 of 1967), it said.
The Government is also of the opinion that the activities of HNLC are detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, and if these are not immediately curbed and controlled, the HNLC may regroup and rearm itself, expand its cadres, procure sophisticated weapons, cause loss of lives of civilians and security forces and properties and thereby accelerate its anti-national activities, the notification added.
