New Delhi, Apr 18 ,2016: The Indian hockey team returned home after clinching the silver medal at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia.
The 2016 performance was the team’s best since 2010, when they won the gold at the tournament. India beat Japan, Canada, Pakistan and Malaysia in the tournament but lost the finals to Australia to end with the silver medal.
Fielding an experimental team, which featured a lot of young, inexperienced faces, they scored 18 goals in the tournament, the second most by any side.
Speaking after arriving in the country, captain Sardar Singh said, “This was a good experience for youngsters, who were playing with the senior team for the first time. In particular, Harmanpreet, Surender and Harjeet showed that they are capable of playing at the higher level and fit into the team perfectly.”
Coach Roelant Oltmans also added, “It is a good preparation for Rio. We have identified some of our weaknesses, which a tournament like this highlights, and can now work on them extensively to make sure we can have a strong showing at the Olympics.

New Delhi, Apr 18 ,2016: Two hostels for the students of the Northeast studying in the Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University will soon be constructed, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said.
This was conveyed by Singh, Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, when a group of Northeast students from Delhi University called on him yesterday.
Singh told the students that in Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Ministry of DoNER has already acquired a piece of land in the campus and after some delay on account of forest clearance from Delhi administration, the land is now ready to be used for a Northeast hostel.
Similarly, he said, for the students of Delhi University, the Ministry of DoNER had written to the Vice-Chancellor to identify a piece of land where a hostel could be brought up to accommodate Northeast students studying in different colleges affiliated with the University.
The students, during the informal interaction, discussed a wide range of issues of their concern.
The students appreciated the Minister for his various initiatives taken for the Northeast students studying in Delhi.
Responding to a suggestion by students, Singh said he saw merit in the demand that in the guest houses in Delhi for eight states of the Northeast, a certain priority can be earmarked for accommodating the needy patients from these states or the poor students who come to Delhi to appear in different examinations.
He said this issue will be taken up with the Delhi based Resident Commissioners (RCs) of North Eastern states.

Mehsana: On Sunday curfew clamped in Mehsana town in Gujarat and mobile internet service banned as a massive rally of the Patel community demanding reservation and immediate release of their jailed leaders turned violent with two buildings being set ablaze and some police vehicles damaged.
“We have imposed a curfew in Mehsana town till tomorrow morning. Mobile internet service has been suspended during this period. The violent mob set ablaze two government properties….a sub-divisional magistrate and a mamlatdar (revenue officer) were injured in the stone-pelting,” said Lochan Sehra, Collector of Mehsana, 73 km from Ahmedabad.
A godown of Food Corporation of India and a district office were set on fire, police said, adding 15 persons have been detained in this connection.
Five policemen and two officials sustained injuries in the incidents, police said while agitators claimed that 25 of their supporters were injured in police action.
In Surat, police detained 435 Patel agitators who hit the streets after learning about incidents in Mehsana. Surat police commissioner Ashish Bhatia said the situation was under control.
Mobile internet services were banned also in Surat and Rajkot as a precautionary measure, district authorities said.
In Mehsana, police used lathicharge and fired teargas shells on the agitators who allegedly engaged in stone- pelting.
Patel protesters had gathered at Modhera crossroad as part of the `Jail Bharo’ agitation announced by the Sardar Patel Group (SPG), one of the prominent groups seeking OBC quota for the Patel community.
SPG chief Lalji Patel received head injury during the face-off with the police.
A blame game erupted with police claiming they resorted to lathicharge only after some started hurling stones at them while Patel alleged that agitators were targeted without any provocation.
“Our protest was peaceful as announced earlier. However, police suddenly hit me and some of our members when we were walking ahead of the procession. I was hit on head. You can see the blood on my face. We were beaten up without any provocation,” said Patel, who along with some other agitators were detained by the police.
In-charge DGP of Gujarat P P Pandey claimed the situation deteriorated only after some people resorted to violence.
“Police always work to establish peace. The gathering was peaceful initially. However, the situation deteriorated only after some persons resorted to violence and damaged property,” Pandey said.

Washington: For the third year in a row, the job of a newspaper reporter has been ranked as the worst profession, according to a survey which listed data scientist as the best job after a review of 200 careers.
CareerCast, a jobs website, ranked each job in its 28th annual Jobs Rated report taking into account the environment, income, outlook and stress associated with each job.
The survey put the annual median salary of a print reporter at $37,200.
“A gradual decline in print publications at the turn of the century became a steep downturn for the past decade. Publications folding mean far fewer job prospects, and declining ad revenue means unfavourable pay for those in the Fourth Estate,” the survey said.
It said the one factor directly contributing to the shrinking of media outlets is the decline of advertising revenue.
The job of a broadcaster came third on the worst 10 list which figures other jobs such as pest control worker, firefighter or military service personnel, enlisted because of the danger, stress and low pay involved.
“Other factors that contribute to a job’s ranking near bottom include danger and stress. That’s the case for enlisted military personnel and firefighters, two roles that serve as pillars of our society,” it said.
“Both are noble careers, but those embarking on these positions should understand the dangers, as well as the surprisingly low pay for each,” it said.
Logger, disc jockey, retail salesperson advertising salesperson and taxi driver are other jobs that figured in the worst 10 list.
Declining employment opportunities contribute to the inclusion of many of the 10 worst careers in the 2016 Jobs Rated report.
Traditional news media is particularly hard hit, the survey said. “The news business has changed drastically over the years, and not in a good way. When people ask me if I miss it, I tell them ‘I feel as if I jumped off of a sinking ship’,” said former Broadcaster Ann Baldwin, president of Baldwin Media PR in New Britain, Connecticut.
The best jobs of 2016 are dominated by professions in mathematics, such as data scientists or statisticians.
The survey cited a strong growth outlook and an annual median salary of $128,240 for data scientists. Information security analyst, audiologist and diagnostic medical sonographer were also among the best jobs.
Washington, Apr 16 ,2016: A US grand jury has slapped two companies of India’s Tata group – Tata Consultancy Services and Tata America International Corp – with a USD 940 million fine in a trade secret lawsuit filed against them.
After days of hearing, the federal grand jury in the US State of Wisconsin ruled that Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.
and Tata America International Corp. must pay USD 240 million to Epic Systems for ripping off its software.
Tatas have also been asked to pay another USD 700 million in punitive damages.
Epic Systems had accused TCS and Tata America International Corp, in a lawsuit filed in October, 2014 in US District Court in Madison which was amended in January and December 2015, of “brazenly stealing the trade secrets, confidential information, documents and data” belonging to Epic.
In its lawsuit, Epic had said that TCS took that data while consulting for its customer.
Epic said that it “recently learned from an informant” that TCS employees have been “fraudulently accessing” Epic’s software beyond what the consulting contract required – and using Epic’s software to improve their own competing product.
One TCS employee’s account, which was used in India and several US locations, downloaded 6,477 documents, according to Epic.
“Rather than compete lawfully with Epic, TCS has engaged in an apparently elaborate campaign of deception to steal documents, confidential information, trade secrets, and other information and data from Epic, for the purpose of realising technical expertise developed by Epic over years of hard work and investment,” the lawsuit said.

Patna, Apr 16,2016: Welcoming Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s clarification that there was no ban on ‘toddy’ sale in the state, Akhil Bharatiya Pasi Samaj’s (ABPS) state unit today appealed the state government to come out with a fresh order stating clearly the places where it could be sold.
The confusion over ‘toddy’ sale has led to police action on members of the community, ABPS Bihar president Jagdish Choudhary told reporters here.
“We welcome Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s statement in which he has clarified there is no ban on toddy sale. Pasi community is very happy with the clarification,” he said.
It would benefit around 20 lakh people belonging to the Pasi community in the state, whose traditional occupation is ‘toddy’ business, he added.
Nitish Kumar while addressing a workshop on ‘Complete Prohibition in Bihar’ on April 14 had said there was no ban on ‘toddy’ sale and attacked leaders for “provoking” Pasi community involved in the business.
