HIROSHIMA: The meeting of foreign ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized countries in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima concluded on Monday.
Here are five things to know about the annual gathering of the top diplomats from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States:
WHY HIROSHIMA?
Japan hopes to send a message of non-proliferation and peace.
Once all but annihilated by a US atomic bomb, Hiroshima has risen back as a symbol of peace and nuclear disarmament. It’s also the hometown of host Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida. Hiroshima can also entertain the guests with its homegrown oysters, reputed to be Japan’s best, and the picturesque Miyajima shrine by the sea.
Kishida told Sunday’s reception that he hoped the experience would help the visiting ministers to “learn how Hiroshima has risen back from the atomic bombings to become the symbol of peace and hope.”
PEACE MEMORIAL PARK AND A-BOMB MUSEUM
The foreign ministers will honor the dead at the Hiroshima Peace Park and visit the nearby Atomic Bomb Museum on Monday, a dream-come-true for many surviving victims, who have for decades campaigned to bring leaders of nuclear states to Hiroshima to see the damage. Japan also hopes the ministers will issue a separate “Hiroshima declaration” on nuclear non-proliferation, in addition to the usual communique.
ON THE AGENDA
The recent attacks in Belgium are likely to put terrorism and violent extremism high on the agenda, along with the refugee issue, nuclear non-proliferation including North Korea’s recent rocket and missile launches, maritime security amid China’s assertive posture in the East and South China seas, as well as the Middle East and Ukraine.
RUSSIA ABSENT BUT ON AGENDA
A key player not in the room is Russia. The eighth member of what used to be the G-8 has been excluded since last year because of its support for separatist rebels in Ukraine. Russia’s foreign minister is due to visit Tokyo to meet Japanese counterpart Kishida later in the week, a possible prelude to a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Russia in May. Other G-7 countries might not welcome such a trip.
SUMMIT OPENER
The foreign ministers’ meeting is the first of 10 ministerial meetings including finance, energy, environment and agriculture, held across the country ahead of the G-7 leader’s summit on May 26-27 in the coastal city of Shima in central Japan, near Ise, home to a Shinto shrine known as the nation’s most sacred with links to the Emperor.

Kolkata, Apr 11 ,2016 : The Calcutta High Court has directed Narada News editor Mathew Samuel to hand over the sting tapes allegedly showing Trinamool Congress leaders taking money and the device used to record these to a three-member committee, set up by it today, in Delhi.
The bench had earlier directed Samuel to submit the tapes and device before the court here along with details of the company running Narada News, a web portal which allegedly conducted sting operations a few years back on several TMC leaders, including ministers and MPs.
Samuel, however, pleaded in his affidavit that he would hand over the tapes to any authority or person as directed by the court as he apprehended threat to his life and property in the city.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice A Banerjee today annouced that the committee would be set up comprising the Registrar General (Original Side) of Calcutta High Court, CBI DIG at Kolkata and an IG-rank officer of West Bengal Police which will secure the tapes and device and submit these before the court .
“The matter, which has serious ramifications on the entire system if the information is true, … we feel the video tapes and device be kept in safe custody for meeting the ends of justice,” the bench today observed while passing the order.
Taking note of Samuel’s affidavit apprehending threat to his life and property, which in this case are the tapes and the device, the court directed that Samuel would hand over the original video tapes and the device to the committee members in Delhi.
The bench directed that the committee would fix the venue and time where the tapes would be handed over. The committee members would secure the tapes and device and submit these before the court.
The court directed that the DGP of West Bengal Police would depute an IG-rank officer and his name would have to be given to the court by tomorrow.
The tapes were released recently by Narada News.
Three PILs were filed seeking action against Trinamool Congress leaders who were purportedly shown accepting money in exchange for promise of favours in the sting video.

Hiroshima, Apr 11 ,2016 : Group of Seven foreign ministers today pledged support for the US-led coalition to “intensify and accelerate” its fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
“Terrorism is an urgent global security threat that requires international collaboration and unified responses,” they said in a statement at the end of a two-day meeting in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
“We strongly support the (Global) Coalition’s resolve to intensify and accelerate the campaign against” IS in Iraq and Syria.
The remarks come as the US-led coalition is stepping up pressure on IS, which has suffered a string of territorial losses in recent months in both Iraq and Syria.
The coalition is carrying out air strikes against the jihadist group, and is also providing training and arms to Iraqi forces.
“In response to the current threat level, we are working on a G7 action plan on countering terrorism that will include concrete measures to enhance G7 and international counterterrorism efforts”, they said, adding that it would be adopted at a G7 leaders’ summit in Japan next month.
The G7 consists of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and the US. The foreign policy chief of the European Union also participated in this week’s meeting.

Between 1980 and 2014 The number of adults with diabetes in the world increased four-fold from 108 million to 422 million between 1980 and 2014. The increase has particularly been sharp in low and middle-income countries. In 2014, 50 per cent of adults with diabetes lived in five countries — China, India, the U.S. Brazil and Indonesia, notes a paper published in The Lancet. The paper is based on data from 751 studies totalling 4.4 million adults from 200 countries.
The prevalence of diabetes in adults (after adjusting for age) more than doubled for men in India and China (3.7 to 9.1 per cent in India; 3.5 to 9.9 per cent in China) but increased by 80 per cent among women in India (4.6 to 8.3 per cent) but only 50 per cent in women in China (5 to 7.6 per cent).
The absolute number of adults with diabetes in India increased from 11.9 million in 1980 to 64.5 million in 2014. In the case of China, the increase was from 20.4 million in 1980 to 102.9 million in 2014. While India contributed 15.3 per cent of global share of adults with diabetes in 2014, it was 24.4 per cent in the case of China.
In the case of the U.S., the absolute increase in the number of diabetics was from 8.1 million in 1980 to 22.4 million in 2014. However, global share of adults with diabetes in the case of the U.S. reduced from 7.5 per cent in 1980 to 5.3 per cent in 2014. China, India and the U.S. have maintained their number one, two and three positions in 1980 and 2014.
Indonesia and Pakistan moved up in the world ranking from 12th and 13th position in 1980 (with 2.1 million and 1.7 million diabetics respectively) to fifth and sixth position in 2014 (with 11.7 and 11 million diabetics respectively).
In the case of Western Europe, though there has been an increase in overall rates of diabetes in many countries between 1980 and 2014, the increase has largely been due to ageing population.
There is a very slim chance of meeting the UN global target of halting the rise in diabetes and obesity (against the 2010 baseline) by 2025 if current trends in the rates of diabetes, which are rising quickly in China, India, and many other low- and middle-income countries, continues.
India faces a double whammy with increasing prevalence of obesity and underweight population. According to an April 2, 2016 paper in The Lancet, ranked 19th in the world in 1975, India had only 0.4 million obese men and 0.8 million obese women. But in 2014, the number shot up to 9.8 million obese men and 20 million obese women; Indian men and women occupied the 5th and 3rd rank respectively in the world in 2014.
With 0.1 million, Indian women were ranked 35th in the severely obese category in 1975 but shot up to 8th position in 2014 with 3.7 million severely obese women.
If the number of obese men and women is increasing in India, it ranks number one in the case of underweight adults. According to The Lancet, the number of underweight men in India increased from 61.4 million in 1975 to 101.8 million in 2014. The number of underweight women in India increased from 58.3 million in 1975 to 100.5 million in 2014.
As a result of the huge number of underweight men and women in the country, India’s percentage contribution to global underweight was also very high. India contributed to nearly 38 per cent of global underweight men in 1975 and 46.2 per cent in 2014. In the case of women, India contributed to nearly 33.4 per cent of global underweight women in 1975 and 41.6 per cent in 2014.
