Mumbai, Apr 20 ,2016: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday permitted the BCCI to hold the May 1 IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants in Pune, a week after it ordered shifting to other venues all post-April 30 matches planned in drought-hit Maharashtra.
A division bench of justices V M Kanade and M S Karnik granted the permission while hearing an application filed by BCCI’s general manager (games development) Ratnakar Shetty urging the court to allow the cricket body to hold the May 1 match as scheduled in Pune, citing logistical and other difficulties in moving it to another venue.
“As an exception, due to logistical reasons mentioned by BCCI in the application we are allowing the match to he held in Pune on May 1,” the order said.
The application was filed after the high court passed the order on April 13 directing all IPL matches from April 30 on wards to be shifted out of Maharashtra to avoid use of huge quantities of water for maintenance of stadiums when the state was reeling under a grim drought.
By that order, 13 matches were to be shifted to other states.
According to Shetty’s application, the Pune team is scheduled to play a match against Gujarat Lions on April 29 in Pune, and hence, it is “practically impossible” for BCCI and the Pune franchise to shift the May 1 match to an another venue outside Maharashtra and “make all arrangements for the same in just a single day”.
The High Court had issued its April 13 order on a PIL by NGO ‘Loksatta Movement’ which challenged the use of over 60 lakh litres of water for ground management despite drought in the state and sought for all the matches to be shifted out of Maharashtra.
The BCCI had given an assurance that IPL franchises of Mumbai and Pune would contribute Rs five crore to CM’s drought relief fund and that treated sewage water would be used for maintaining the stadiums, without wasting potable water.

New Delhi, Apr 20 ,2016: Aiming to keep bags of school children light, CBSE has suggested that teachers should discourage senior students from carrying heavy reference books while schools may continue to keep books of kids up to class II in the school.
In a notification issued by it, CBSE has come up with various recommendations, including the suggestion that school heads and teachers should ensure that senior students bring books according to the time table, and discourage them from carrying heavy ‘reference’ books or other such materials to school.
It has also said it should be ensured that the school curriculum supports more activity-based, ICT-supported learning for all the main subjects in all classes, as far as possible.
Homework is to be ‘staggered’ to prevent overload and academic co-ordinators or supervisors may monitor this, is another suggestion offered by CBSE.
Schools have also been asked to explore the possibility of block scheduling of subject classes in the class time table.
Co-curricular activities should be conducted every day, and scheduled in the time table accordingly, to ensure the balance of bag weight throughout the academic session, the CBSE has said.
School heads should counsel parents and teachers about developmental issues caused by children carrying heavy bags to school, according to it.
Among other suggestions is restriction of number of textbooks to the prescribed norms [NCERT], particularly at the primary and upper primary levels.
It has also been recommended that books should not be covered with non-biodegradable plastic sheet.
Another suggestion is that schools may continue the practice of maintaining and keeping books of students up to class II in the school.
Schools may provide racks with locks in all classrooms, where reference books, sports equipment, uniforms can be safely stored without needing to be carried to school, is another suggestion.
Setting up of class libraries and asking students to carry well-designed backpacks correctly, to promote good posture, are among other recommendations.

New Delhi, Apr 18,2016: Gender equality is a “constitutional message” and the ban on entry of women of a particular age group in the historic Sabarimala temple cannot be claimed as a right to manage religious affairs by its management, the Supreme Court said today.
“Gender equality is a constitutional message and they (temple management) cannot say that this (banning women) comes under their right to manage religious affairs,” a bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said.
The bench, also comprising Justices V Gopala Gowda and Kurian Joseph, reiterated that it would test the “so-called” customary practice under the provisions of the Constitution.
At the outset, senior advocate Indira Jaising, appearing for NGO ‘Happy to Bleed’ which is seeking women’s entry into the historic shrine in Kerala, said the law was meant for “removal of social ills” and constitutional principles would prevail over discriminatory customs and beliefs.
“The ban on entry of women cannot be said to be part of the right to manage a public religious places like temple,” she said and referred to various judgements to buttress her arguments.
The right to enter a public temple is available to all Hindus irrespective of gender, she said, adding that any custom, belief or even law could be termed “void” if they do not conform to the constitutional principles.
During the hearing when Jaising started dealing with the aspect that the deity at Sabarimala is “celibate” and “brahmachari”, the bench asked her not to get into it.
“They (Travancore Devaswom Board) rely on customs, tradition and philosophy and you rely on Constitution. Let us not get into the nature of deity…,” the court said, adding it would examine whether any custom is protected by any law.
The court is hearing a PIL, filed by Indian Young Lawyers’ Association (IYLA) seeking entry of women in the Sabarimala temple, located on a hill-top in the Western Ghat mountain ranges of Kerala’s Pathanamthitta District.

Berlin, April 18,2016: A special commission has been set up by Germany’s western city of Essen for a thorough probe into the gurdwara explosion in which three persons were injured, even as India’s Consul General in Frankfurt visited the Sikh community and held talks with authorities.
Raveesh Kumar was apprised of the current level of investigation and the situation following the attack on the Nanaksar Satsang Darbar gurdwara during meetings with the Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen and Police Commissioner Frank Richter yesterday.
The Mayor assured Kumar that the city administration, the police and the state prosecutor’s office would take all necessary measures to ensure that the Sikh community can feel secure, the city of Essen and the Police Commissioner’s office said in a joint statement.
Religious freedom is guaranteed in the German society and any form of violence against religious minorities will be totally unacceptable, Kufen said.
Richter told Kumar that the police department has set up a special commission to thoroughly investigate the explosion, which occurred in the entrance hall of the gurdwara.
Richter said the police so far have no indications of a terrorist background, “but we are investigating in all directions and thereby we are working closely with the Indian authorities”.
A 60-year-old suffered serious injuries and had to be hospitalized, while two 47- and 56-year-old men had minor injuries. The injured included the ‘granthi’ (priest) on whom the whole pane of glass had fallen due to the impact.
Yesterday, India expressed “distress” at what is being deemed as a deliberate act.
Eyewitnesses have spoken of “a kind of bomb” that exploded at the gurdwara on Saturday evening. About 200 persons, including many children, were present at the wedding that began very late and was ongoing when the explosion occurred.
The explosion was so violent that windowpanes of adjacent buildings were broken. The building was heavily damaged.
Kumar and Kufen jointly visited the Sikh community after their discussions and the mayor conveyed his solidarity and the city’s support to protect them, the statement said.
The police were searching for a masked man dressed in black, who was seen by eyewitnesses fleeing the area soon after the detonation. Three occupants of a car parked near the gurdwara, who were taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the explosion, were set free after questioning on Saturday night.
Gurdwara Nanaskar and the residence of the Sikh community’s president have been put under police protection.
It is one of the main places of worship for the Sikh community in the German state of North Rhine Westphalia.
