Paris, Oct 30,2020: French officials confirmed on Friday that the man who stabbed two women and a man to death in a church in France’s Nice had arrived from Tunisia by a migrant boat to Italy’s Lampedusa island last month, BBC reported.
Authorities said that the suspect, identified as Brahim Aouissaoui, 21, had been issued an Italian Red Cross document, after he arrived in Italy. He was shot by police and is in a critical condition.
Officials said one of the victims of Thursday’s attack at the Notre-Dame basilica in the city of Nice was “virtually beheaded”, which President Emmanuel Macron called an “Islamist terrorist attack”.
Mr Macron said the they will be increasing the number of soldiers to protect public places – such as churches and schools – from 3,000 to 7,000, even as the country’s security alert has been raised to the highest level.
Thursday’s stabbings comes days after another attack earlier this month near a school north-west of Paris, where Samuel Paty, a teacher, was beheaded days after showing controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to some of his pupils.
That murder heightened tensions in France and beyond, as Mr Macron defended the right to publish the cartoons and as his government attempted to crack down on radical Islam angered Turkey and other Muslim-majority countries.
The suspect in the Nice attack was heard repeatedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) before being shot by police.
A Koran, two telephones and a 30cm (12-inch) knife were found on the attacker, said French chief anti-terrorist prosecutor Jean-François Ricard.
Wellington, Oct 30,2020: New Zealanders voted to legalise euthanasia in the preliminary results of a referendum held in mid-October alongside the general election, after years of emotional debate, the results of which were declared on Friday.
The results showed that 65.2% of voters supported the End of Life Choice Act 2019 which now comes into force as a new law from next year, the BBC reported.
This basically means that terminally ill people, with less than six months to live, will be given the opportunity to choose assisted dying if approved by two doctors.
The referendum is binding and the law will come into effect in November 2021.
However, the results do not include an estimated 480,000 special votes, including postal and overseas ballots, so the full outcome will not be confirmed until next Friday. But with such strong support, the final outcome is not expected to change.
Once the law comes into force New Zealand join a small group of countries, including the Netherlands and Canada, that allow euthanasia legally.
In a separate non-binding referendum held at the same time, New Zealanders narrowly rejected a proposal to legalise recreational cannabis.
The preliminary results on the cannabis vote was 53.1% no and 46.1% yes – though this result may be subject to change when the special votes are counted.
NICE, France Oct 29,2020: A knife-wielding attacker shouting “Allahu Akbar” beheaded a woman and killed two other people at a church in the French city of Nice on Thursday, while a gunman was shot dead by police in a separate incident.
Within hours of the Nice attack, police killed a man who had threatened passersby with a handgun in Montfavet, near the southern French city of Avignon. He was also shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest), according to radio station Europe 1.
In Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, state television reported that a Saudi man had been arrested in the Red Sea city of Jeddah after attacking and injuring a guard at the French consulate there. The French Embassy said he was in hospital after a knife attack and his life was not in danger.
Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, said the attack in his city had happened in or near Notre Dame church and was similar to the beheading earlier this month near Paris of teacher Samuel Paty, who had used cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a civics class.
Thursday’s attacks, on the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad, came at a time of growing Muslim anger at France’s defence of the right to publish the cartoons, and protesters have denounced France in street rallies in several Muslim-majority countries.
After the Nice attack, Prime Minister Jean Castex raised France’s security alert to its highest level and said the government’s response would be firm and implacable.
Estrosi said the Nice attacker had repeatedly shouted the phrase “Allahu Akbar” even being detained by police.
One of the people killed inside the church was believed to be the church warden, Estrosi said, adding that one woman had escaped from inside the church into a bar opposite the 19th century neo-Gothic building.
“The suspected knife attacker was shot by police while being detained. He is on his way to hospital, he is alive,” Estrosi told reporters.
New Delhi, October 29,2020: The Supreme Court on Thursday requested the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court to list before an appropriate bench at the earliest plea for seeking the release of activist and poet Dr P Varavara Rao, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case, on medical grounds.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde said it is “bothered” by how the Bombay High Court has not heard the plea filed by Varavara Rao seeking his release.
The apex court took into note that the last hearing in the bail matter of Rao before the Bombay High Court was on September 17 and asked Rao’s wife to appeal before the High Court and apprise it on her husband’s need for specialised medical treatment.
Pendyala Hemalatha, the wife of 81-year-old Rao, had approached the top court seeking the release of her husband from jail on medical grounds. She had urged to release him on temporary medical bail and sought to allow him to travel to Hyderabad to be with his family.
Rao is charged with sedition and offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
New Delhi, Oct 29 ,2020: The government on Thursday banned exports of onion seeds with immediate effect amidst rising prices of the bulb in the domestic markets.
Earlier, the export of onion seeds was in the restricted category, which means an exporter was required to obtain a licence or permission from the government for shipments.
“The export of onion seeds is prohibited, with immediate effect,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
It added that the provisions under transitional arrangement shall not be applicable.
Onion seed exports were worth USD 0.57 million during April-August this fiscal against USD 3.5 million in the full 2019-20 fiscal.
The DGFT has already banned exports of onion to contain onion prices. The Centre imposed stock holding limit on retail and wholesale traders till December 31 to improve the domestic availability of the commodity and provide relief to consumers.
Retailers can stock onion only up to 2 tonne, whereas wholesale traders are allowed to keep up to 25 tonne, Consumer Affairs Secretary Leena Nandan said in a press conference.
Onion prices have shot up sharply to about Rs 70 per kg in the last few weeks in the wake of damage to standing Kharif crop in producing areas due to heavy rainfall.
