New Delhi, July 25,2024: Around 6,700 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh so far, helped by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, following the violent anti-quota protests that engulfed that country, the MEA said today.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering questions at his weekly briefing, said: “So far 6,700 Indian students have returned from Bangladesh.”
The spokesperson also said that India is hopeful that the situation in Bangladesh will return to normal very soon.
“We have received excellent cooperation from the Bangladeshi government; our High Commission has arranged for the safe and secure travel of the Indian nationals to the border crossing points or to the airports, as the case may be.
“Our High Commission and the Assistant High Commissions are operation 24×7 helplines and all our people there, the students and the Indian nationals, they can reach out to them, and they have been rendering whatever assistance that has been requested for,” the spokesperson added.
“We feel that being a close neighbour with whom we share very warm and friendly ties, we are hopeful that the situation in the country will return to normal soon,” he added.
India has maintained that the anti-quota stir in Bangladesh, which has seen widespread violence and several deaths, is an internal matter of that country.
New Delhi, July 25,2024: In the wake of Canadian authorities arresting two people in connection with online death threats against PM Justin Trudeau, India on Thursday targeted Ottawa for harbouring double standards with regard to freedom of expression and rule of law.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, answering queries about the arrests of two people in Canada in June in connection with online death threats targeting Trudeau, said:
“We’ve seen these reports. When a democracy adopts different yardsticks to measure or implement the rule of law and freedom of expression, it only exposes its own double standards.
“We expect Canada to take action against anti-India elements who have repeatedly threatened Indian leaders, institutions, airlines and diplomats by violence.
“We would like to see strong action or the same level of action on the threats posed to us as well,” he added.
His comments came as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s (RCMP) Federal Policing Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET), Northwest Region, announced the arrests of the two men on Monday.
On June 6, 23-year-old Mason John Baker, a resident of Calgary in Alberta, was charged with uttering threats. On June 13, 67-year-old Garry Belzevick, 67, a resident of Edmonton, was arrested for allegedly uttering similar threats against Trudeau. Those alleged threats, in a YouTube post, were directed not just at Trudeau but also Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, as per media reports.
In contrast, Canada has given full freedom to pro-Khalistani elements to voice their separatist agenda and threaten PM Modi and other leaders, and Indian diplomats in Canada, and even threaten to blow up an Air India plane. Canada has not taken action against these people citing freedom of expression.
In June, Khalistani separatists gathered in front of India’s consulate in Vancouver with effigies of the bullet-riddled body of former PM Indira Gandhi while glorifying the Sikh bodyguards who assassinated her
The Khalistanis carried placards reading “KILL MODI politics” and a picture of Talwinder Singh Parmar, the self-proclaimed mastermind of the Air India bombings, who was being glorified as a “Canadian Singh who attained martyrdom fighting Indian terror forces”.
Canadian MP of Indian origin Chandra Arya has criticised the Khalistanis for glorification of the killers of Indira Gandhi.
CAIRO/JERUSALEM/GAZA July 24,2024: Palestinian residents of eastern neighbourhoods of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip fled their homes on Tuesday as Israeli tanks advanced deep into the area after Israel ordered the population to evacuate.
The tanks pushed into the Khan Younis town of Bani Suhaila and several districts nearby were bombed for a second day, forcing tens of thousands of civilians to seek refuge elsewhere.
Israel said its action – the latest in a series of major assaults in recent weeks in parts of Gaza where it had long since claimed to have rooted out Hamas – was intended to prevent the militant group’s fighters from regrouping.
Gaza health officials said Israeli military strikes since Monday killed at least 80 Palestinians in the Khan Younis area – adding to a death toll of more than 39,000 in nearly 10 months of warfare, according to Gaza authorities’ figures.
The Israeli military said Hamas and other groups used those areas to renew attacks, including firing rockets.
Many of the newly displaced families said they had to spend the night in the streets as they searched in vain for a space as western Khan Younis and central Gaza areas were overcrowded. Some of them said they had to flee under Israeli fire.
“For us, the most basic of essentials in our lives are not available,” a woman, Ibtihal Al-Breim, told Reuters in Khan Younis. “Basic needs (like) water which we had to carry, the electricity, of course, is cut off, food is cut off, let alone the expensive prices, and there’s no work.”
“And then suddenly you’re told now you have to leave. Without prior warning, suddenly rockets began falling on us. We had to leave and I wasn’t intending to leave – but then there were quadcopters and aircraft, we saw the tanks with our own eyes,” she added.
U.N. officials described scenes of despair on Tuesday as Israeli airstrikes hit the area.
“The situation is impossible,” the U.N.’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said on X.
In a later post, it said there was nowhere safe to go in Gaza.
“People are exhausted from the continuous displacement and unlivable conditions & they are trapped in increasingly small & overcrowded areas,” it said.
The Israeli military said dozens of militants had been killed in Khan Younis by its tanks and warplanes or in close-quarter combat. Weapon caches and tunnels used by the militants had been destroyed, it said.
esidents in Khan Younis said tanks remained stationed deep inside Bani Suhaila, east of downtown Khan Younis. Soldiers were seen searching inside the town’s main cemetery, while others commandeered roofs of high-rise buildings, firing their guns toward the western areas from time to time, residents said.
CEASEFIRE HOPES
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in Washington this week, told families of hostages held in Gaza that a deal that would secure their release could be near.
Hamas-led fighters triggered the war on Oct. 7 by storming into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 captives, according to Israeli tallies. Hamas and other militants are still holding 120 hostages; Israel believes around a third of them are dead.
Netanyahu was in Washington and is expected to meet U.S. President Joe Biden later this week after making an address to Congress. Speaking in the U.S. capital on Monday to families of hostages, he said: “The conditions (for a deal) are undoubtedly ripening. This is a good sign.”
Months of efforts mediated by Egypt and Qatar to reach a ceasefire gained momentum in recent weeks under a proposal outlined by Biden in May.
An Israeli negotiation team is due on Thursday to resume talks that would include hostages being released in return for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. According to two Egyptian security sources, Israel informed Egypt that an Israeli delegation would arrive in Cairo on Wednesday evening.
New Delhi, July 23,2024: The Modi 3.0 government’s first Budget on Tuesday announced a Rs 2 lakh crore package to create more jobs while making the tax regime attractive for foreign companies and providing marginal income tax relief to the salaried class.
The Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament maintained higher Capex to support growth and loosened purse strings for projects in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar to appease crucial National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United).
“I am happy to announce the Prime Minister’s package of 5 schemes and initiatives to facilitate employment, skilling and other opportunities for 4.1 crore youth over a 5-year period with a central outlay of Rs 2 lakh crore,” Sitharaman said while presenting the seventh successive Budget.
The Minister said that one crore youth will be skilled by top companies in five years. A 12-month internship program with a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000 was also announced.
The stock market response to the Budget was lukewarm with the BSE Sensex shedding 73 points.
Hailing the Budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that it ensures inclusive growth, benefiting every segment of society and paving the way for a developed India.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, who has been aggressive in cornering the government over a host of issues, termed the Budget as ‘Kursi Bachao’ Budget – indirectly referring to the government’s compulsion to keep the allies happy.
Earlier, Sitharaman announced a special financial package of Rs 15,000 crore for Andhra Pradesh and said that concerted efforts would be made to fulfill the commitments under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. The Finance Minister said that the special financial package will be arranged in the current financial year to develop the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
In the case of Bihar, Sitharaman announced that the Centre will support development of an industrial node at Gaya on Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor. Road connectivity projects worth Rs 26,000 crore would also be taken up in the state. The road projects include Patna-Purnea Expressway, Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway and additional two-lane bridge over the Ganga at Buxar.
Despite unveiling several populist schemes, Sitharaman stuck to fiscal prudence and pegged the fiscal deficit at 4.9% of the GDP for FY25 from the earlier estimate of 5.1% projected in the interim Budget this year. She emphasized that the fiscal consolidation path announced by her in 2021 has served the economy very well, and the government will aim to reach a deficit below 4.5% next year.
Tax buoyancy and record dividend transfer by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have contributed to the government’s lower fiscal deficit target.
Ahead of three state elections, the Budget has made an all-out attempt to woo voters, especially the youth and salaried middle class. In the new tax regime, it has enhanced standard deduction to Rs 75,000 from Rs 50,000, resulting in a saving Rs 17,500. As a result, no income tax will be payable for income up to Rs 3 lakh annually.
The Budget also provided impetus to manufacturing by proposing 12 “Plug and Play” industrial parks, reducing compliance burden for MSMEs and setting up e-commerce export hubs. It also exempted nearly two dozen critical minerals from custom duties.
Looking to take forward the success in local manufacturing of electronics, the Budget 2024-25 has also proposed to cut basic custom duty (BCD) on mobile phones, mobile PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) and mobile chargers to 15% from 20%.
In order to enhance domestic value addition in gold and precious metal jewellery in the country, the Finance Minister proposed to reduce customs duties on gold and silver to 6% and that on platinum to 6.4%. The lower custom duty would mean prices of these items going down.
At the same time, Sitharaman also provided relief to cancer patients exempting three more cancer drugs from customs duties.
For boosting foreign capital inflows, the Budget also proposed to reduce the corporate tax rate on foreign companies from 40 to 35 per cent. Seeking to bolster the Indian start-up ecosystem, Sitharaman announced to abolish angel tax for all classes of investors.
Top industry body CII hailed the Union Budget saying it provides continuity to India’s successful holistic economic strategy to drive growth with inclusion.
“The Union Budget 2024-25 takes forward the government’s successful economic strategy of the previous two terms, led by investments and reforms and focused on inclusion and empowerment. The announcement on collaboration with States to take forward the next gen reforms with the twin objectives of employment generation and growth, is a welcome step,” CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee said.
Infrastructure boost remained the cornerstone of the Budget as in the previous year with the Finance Minister provisioning Rs 11.11 lakh crore for capital expenditure (capex) during FY25. Housing for the poor under PM Awas scheme and expansion of rural road network were some of the key highlights of the Budget.
Another key focus area of the Budget was energy security with the Minister promising to bring out a policy document on appropriate energy transition pathways that balances the imperatives of employment, growth and environmental sustainability. Solar energy also got a special boost in the Budget.
