Berlin, Feb 25,2025: Friedrich Merz’s conservatives have won Germany’s election, well ahead of rival parties but short of the 30 pc vote share they had expected, media reports said.
“Let’s celebrate tonight, and in the morning we’ll get to work,” he told cheering supporters. His immediate priority is to try to form a government with the third-placed Social Democrats of Olaf Scholz, the BBC reported.
Even before the result was clear, Merz said his top priority was unity in Europe, so that “step by step, we can really achieve independence from the US.”
According to reports, the other big winner in Sunday’s vote was the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), who are celebrating a record second-place result of 20.8pc.
Alice Weidel, the AfD’s candidate for chancellor, secured a victory for her supporters, but her party remained hopeful for a more significant outcome, causing a subdued atmosphere at AfD HQ.
Merz, a 69-year-old German chancellor, has pledged to demonstrate European leadership and increase support for Ukraine if elected as the next chancellor, the report said.
Most Germans have been shocked by President Donald Trump’s conduct towards Ukraine and Europe, and Friedrich Merz said the US leader had shown “the Americans are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.”
Trump has labelled Ukraine’s leader a “dictator,” and two of his leading figures have openly backed the AfD in the run-up to the vote. Vice-President JD Vance was accused of meddling in the vote during a visit to Munich, while billionaire Elon Musk has made repeated remarks on his X platform.
According to media reports, Friedrich Merz plans to form a coalition with his Christian Democrats and Scholz’s centre left, despite the Social Democrats’ worst-ever performance of 16.4%.
After the collapse of Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition late last year, Merz had asked the electorate for a strong mandate to form a clear-cut coalition with one other party.
In the event, he secured enough seats only because two of the smaller parties failed to get into parliament.
A two-party coalition would enable him to solve as many of Germany’s problems as he could in four years, he said, from a stagnant economy to closing its borders to irregular migrants, the report said.
German voters had other ideas. They came out in big numbers, with an 83% turnout not seen since before reunification in 1990.
Merz’s CDU party leadership will meet on Monday, and so will the Social Democrat SPD’s, separately, but Scholz will not take part in the talks.
Merz is keen to form a government by Easter. It could be possible, because between the two parties they have 328 seats, a majority of 12 in the 630-seat parliament. But it was not until the early hours of Monday that that became clear, the report said.
Weidel also benefitted from a successful TikTok campaign that drew in big numbers of young voters.
As results came in during the early hours of Monday, it became clear the AfD was far ahead of the other parties in the east, with a projected 34% according to a survey for public broadcaster ZDF, the report said.
“Germans have voted for change,” said Alice Weidel. She said Friedrich Merz’s attempt to forge a coalition would ultimately end in failure: “We’ll have fresh elections—Ion’t think we’ll have to wait another four years.”
But just as the election map turned light blue in the east, much of the rest of Germany turned black—the colour of the CDU.
And Merz dismissed the rise of the AfD out of hand. “The party only exists because there have been problems that haven’t been solved. They’re happy if these problems get worse and worse.”
“We need to solve the problems… then that party, the AfD, will disappear.”
Merz was equally withering towards the new Trump administration.
US President Donald Trump did welcome Merz’s victory. He said it was proof that Germans were, like Americans, tired of “the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration.”
Jerusalem, Feb. 23,2025: Israel announced early Sunday that it had postponed the release of Palestinian detainees, who were set to be freed Saturday under the ceasefire agreement until more hostages are released.
Israel was expected to release about 620 Palestinian detainees on Saturday after Hamas freed six hostages earlier in the day. The six were the final batch of living hostages scheduled to be released in the first phase of the three-phase deal.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that it had been decided to delay the release of Palestinian detainees scheduled for Saturday “until the release of the next hostages is secured, without the disgraceful ceremonies.”
The decision followed what the statement described as “Hamas’ repeated violations, including the disgraceful (hostage release) ceremonies that dishonor our hostages and the cynical use of hostages for propaganda purposes.”
Both Hamas and Israel have been accused of using captives for propaganda, with Hamas parading hostages on stage and Israel attaching derogatory inscriptions to bracelets and T-shirts worn by Palestinian prisoners and photographing them in demeaning poses.
A total of 63 hostages remain in Gaza, with more than half presumed dead, according to Israeli data.
Feb 18,2025: Top US and Russian diplomats will meet in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for talks on resetting their countries’ fractured relations and making a tentative start on trying to end the Ukraine war.
Both sides played down the chances that the first high-level meeting between the countries since US President Donald Trump took office would result in a breakthrough.
Still, the very fact the talks were taking place has triggered concern in Ukraine and Europe following the United States’ recent overtures towards the Kremlin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv was not invited to the discussions in Riyadh, while European leaders were gathering in Paris for emergency talks on how to respond to the radical pivot by the new US administration.
Preparations for a possible summit between presidents Trump and Vladimir Putin are also expected to be on the agenda.
Trump is pushing for a swift resolution to the three-year conflict in Ukraine, while Russia sees his outreach as a chance to win concessions.
Zelensky said Kyiv “did not know anything about” the talks in Riyadh, according to Ukrainian news agencies, and that it “cannot recognize any things or any agreements about us without us”.
He said on social media that any peace deal would need to include “robust and reliable” security guarantees, which France and Britain have called for but not all European powers support.
Russia said ahead of the meeting that Putin and Trump wanted to move on from “abnormal relations” and that it saw no place for Europeans to be at any negotiating table.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and senior Putin aide Yuri Ushakov will meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters the talks would be “primarily devoted to restoring the whole complex of Russian-American relations”, alongside discussions on “possible negotiations on a Ukrainian resolution, and organizing a meeting between the two presidents”.
Moscow, which for years has sought to roll back NATO’s presence in Europe, has made clear it wants to hold bilateral talks with the United States on a plethora of broad security issues, not just a possible Ukraine ceasefire.
Before invading in February 2022, Putin was demanding the military alliance pull its troops, equipment and bases out of several eastern members that were under Moscow’s sphere of influence during the Cold War.
The prospects of any talks leading to an agreement to halt the Ukraine fighting are unclear.
Both Russia and the United States have cast the meeting as the beginning of a potentially lengthy process.
“I don’t think that people should view this as something that is about details or moving forward in some kind of a negotiation,” US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said.
Russia’s Ushakov told state media the talks would discuss “how to start negotiations on Ukraine.”
Both Ukraine and Russia have ruled out territorial concessions and Putin last year demanded Kyiv withdraw its troops from even more territory.
Zelensky will travel to Turkey on Tuesday to discuss the conflict with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and then Saudi Arabia a day later.
He does not plan to hold talks with either the US or Russian delegations, his spokesman said Monday.
Zelensky said last week he was prepared to meet Putin, but only after Kyiv and its allies had a common position on ending the war.
As European leaders gathered in Paris for an emergency security summit, Russia’s Lavrov said Monday he saw no point in them taking part in any Ukraine talks.
The significance of the talks taking place in Riyadh was not lost on analysts.
A diplomatic pariah under the former US administration, it has been brought back into the fold with Trump’s return.
“Europe’s the traditional meeting place for the Americans and the Russians, but that’s not an option in the current environment,” said James Dorsey of the National University of Singapore.
“You either go to Asia or you go to Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Moscow heads into the talks boosted by recent gains on the battlefield, while Kyiv also faces the prospect of losing vital US military aid, long criticized by Trump.
Tehran, Feb 17,2025: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Sunday completely rejected recent “baseless and irresponsible” accusations by the Group of Seven (G7) against Iran.
On Saturday, G7 foreign ministers and the EU high representative issued a statement following a meeting held on the margins of the Munich Security Conference, in which they accused Iran of carrying out “destabilizing actions, including its rapid advancement of uranium enrichment without credible civil justification, facilitation of terrorism organizations and armed groups across the Middle East and the Red Sea and violation of fundamental human rights.”
They also denounced Iran’s “proliferation of ballistic missiles and drones” in the statement.
The G7 countries’ arms and financial support for Israel and their military and political interference in West Asia are the real “destabilizing” actions in the region, Baghaei said in a statement, urging those countries to stop their “meddlesome” policies so as to restore regional stability and security.
The Iranian government has “legitimate right and legal responsibility” to defend Iran’s people, territorial integrity and national sovereignty against any threat and aggression, Baghaei said, stressing that expanding Iran’s military and defensive capabilities based on international laws and regulations is necessary to those ends, and also to peace and security in West Asia.
Iran designed and is implementing peaceful nuclear activities according to its technical and industrial needs as well as international rights and obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency, he said.
Moscow, Feb 17,2025: Russia and the United States will hold talks on Ukraine in Riyadh on Tuesday, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported.
The US delegation on the talks is expected to include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, the publication said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US leader Donald Trump had a phone conversation last Wednesday, which lasted almost an hour and a half, the leaders discussed issues related to the exchange of citizens of Russia and the United States, as well as the settlement of the situation in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Washington was Moscow’s main counterpart in matters of settling the situation in Ukraine. Trump later announced plans to hold a meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia, and the teams of the presidents of the United States and Russia would soon prepare for this summit.

Imphal, Feb 14,2025: After bringing troubled Manipur under President’s rule, the authorities on Friday tightened security around the Raj Bhawan and other important locations, while discussions continued within the ruling BJP to find a successor to N Biren Singh, who quit as Chief Minister last week.
N Biren submitted his resignation to Governor A K Bhalla on Sunday and the BJP hasn’t so far been able to choose a new leader of its legislative party.
The Central government on Thursday imposed President’s rule in the northeastern state where the legislative Assembly has been kept under suspended animation.
Ksh Santa, Manipur state Secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has demanded fresh election rather than keeping the state under President’s rule.
BJP leader Sambit Patra, who is camping in Manipur to hold talks with party MLAs and leaders, has also been given Z category security by the Union Home Minister.
A notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs said President of India Droupadi Murmu received a report from Manipur Governor Bhalla and after considering the report and other information she was satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the Government of the state could be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India. So she imposed President’s rule.
This is the 11th time that President’s Rule has been promulgated in Manipur. The last time such a measure was in place was from June 2, 2001 to March 6, 2002 – a period of 277 days. Manipur had then witnessed a major crisis on the demand for protecting the territorial integrity of the state. Eighteen persons died during the violence in June, 2001.
CAIRO,Feb 14,2025: Hamas said Thursday it would go ahead with the release of three more Israeli hostages, paving the way toward resolving a major dispute over the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip.
The militant group had threatened to delay the next release of captives after accusing Israel of failing to meet its obligations to allow in tents and shelters, among other alleged violations of the truce. Israel, with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, has said it will resume fighting if the hostages are not freed, but did not immediately comment on the statement by Hamas.
The announcement from Hamas could allow the ceasefire to continue for now, even after Israel said Thursday that a rocket had been launched from Gaza. But doubts remain about the long-term durability of the truce.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was meeting Thursday with top military and security officials at the army’s Southern Command headquarters near the Gaza border.
Hamas said it held talks in Cairo with Egyptian officials and was in contact with Qatar’s prime minister about bringing in more shelters, medical supplies, fuel and heavy equipment for clearing vast amounts of rubble in Gaza — its key demand in recent days. It said in a statement that the mediators had pledged to “remove all hurdles.”
Shortly after the announcement, Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Qanou confirmed to The Associated Press by phone that three hostages will be released on Saturday, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
Egypt’s state-run Qahera TV, which is close to the country’s security services, reported that Egypt and Qatar had succeeded in resolving the dispute. The two Arab countries have served as key mediators with Hamas and helped broker the ceasefire, which took effect in January, more than 15 months into the war.
New Delhi, Feb 14,2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday paid tributes to the martyrs of the Pulwama terror attack in 2019.
In his message on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, Modi wrote, “Tributes to the brave heroes who lost their lives in Pulwama in the year 2019. Generations to come will never forget their sacrifice and dedication to the nation.
In his message, Shah said, “On behalf of the grateful nation, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the cowardly terror attack in Pulwama on this day in 2019.
Terrorism is the biggest enemy of the entire human race and the whole world is united against it. Whether it is surgical strikes or air strikes, the Modi government is determined to eradicate terrorists by running a campaign against them with a policy of ‘zero tolerance’.
It is noteworthy that on February 14, 2019, terrorists of terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out a dastardly attack by targeting a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. About 40 soldiers were martyred in this attack.
In response, India carried out surgical strikes and demolished terrorist hideouts in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which many terrorists were killed.
