Imphal, Feb 14,2025: After bringing troubled Manipur under President’s rule, the authorities on Friday tightened security around the Raj Bhawan and other important locations, while discussions continued within the ruling BJP to find a successor to N Biren Singh, who quit as Chief Minister last week.
N Biren submitted his resignation to Governor A K Bhalla on Sunday and the BJP hasn’t so far been able to choose a new leader of its legislative party.
The Central government on Thursday imposed President’s rule in the northeastern state where the legislative Assembly has been kept under suspended animation.
Ksh Santa, Manipur state Secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has demanded fresh election rather than keeping the state under President’s rule.
BJP leader Sambit Patra, who is camping in Manipur to hold talks with party MLAs and leaders, has also been given Z category security by the Union Home Minister.
A notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs said President of India Droupadi Murmu received a report from Manipur Governor Bhalla and after considering the report and other information she was satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the Government of the state could be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India. So she imposed President’s rule.
This is the 11th time that President’s Rule has been promulgated in Manipur. The last time such a measure was in place was from June 2, 2001 to March 6, 2002 – a period of 277 days. Manipur had then witnessed a major crisis on the demand for protecting the territorial integrity of the state. Eighteen persons died during the violence in June, 2001.
CAIRO,Feb 14,2025: Hamas said Thursday it would go ahead with the release of three more Israeli hostages, paving the way toward resolving a major dispute over the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip.
The militant group had threatened to delay the next release of captives after accusing Israel of failing to meet its obligations to allow in tents and shelters, among other alleged violations of the truce. Israel, with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, has said it will resume fighting if the hostages are not freed, but did not immediately comment on the statement by Hamas.
The announcement from Hamas could allow the ceasefire to continue for now, even after Israel said Thursday that a rocket had been launched from Gaza. But doubts remain about the long-term durability of the truce.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was meeting Thursday with top military and security officials at the army’s Southern Command headquarters near the Gaza border.
Hamas said it held talks in Cairo with Egyptian officials and was in contact with Qatar’s prime minister about bringing in more shelters, medical supplies, fuel and heavy equipment for clearing vast amounts of rubble in Gaza — its key demand in recent days. It said in a statement that the mediators had pledged to “remove all hurdles.”
Shortly after the announcement, Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif al-Qanou confirmed to The Associated Press by phone that three hostages will be released on Saturday, as stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.
Egypt’s state-run Qahera TV, which is close to the country’s security services, reported that Egypt and Qatar had succeeded in resolving the dispute. The two Arab countries have served as key mediators with Hamas and helped broker the ceasefire, which took effect in January, more than 15 months into the war.
New Delhi, Feb 14,2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday paid tributes to the martyrs of the Pulwama terror attack in 2019.
In his message on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, Modi wrote, “Tributes to the brave heroes who lost their lives in Pulwama in the year 2019. Generations to come will never forget their sacrifice and dedication to the nation.
In his message, Shah said, “On behalf of the grateful nation, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the cowardly terror attack in Pulwama on this day in 2019.
Terrorism is the biggest enemy of the entire human race and the whole world is united against it. Whether it is surgical strikes or air strikes, the Modi government is determined to eradicate terrorists by running a campaign against them with a policy of ‘zero tolerance’.
It is noteworthy that on February 14, 2019, terrorists of terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed carried out a dastardly attack by targeting a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. About 40 soldiers were martyred in this attack.
In response, India carried out surgical strikes and demolished terrorist hideouts in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which many terrorists were killed.

Amritsar/New Delhi, Feb 5,2025: A US C-17 military plane carrying Indians deported from the US landed in Amritsar today.
Of the 205 Indian nationals deported by the US, 104 arrived at Amritsar Airport onboard the US military aircraft, reports said.
The deportees were undergoing verification by the government officials.
The deportation of the undocumented Indian nationals is in line with US President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies.
The aircraft had left with the Indians on February 4. It is the first time the US is using a military plane to deport illegal immigrants.
Among those returning, 33 are from Haryana, 30 from Punjab, and two from Chandigarh, reports said. The deportees also include children.
The Punjab government has arranged buses to transport the deportees to their respective locations.
Individuals without valid documentation will be handed over to the Punjab Police for further processing.
The deportation of the Indian nationals comes days after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced concerns over “irregular migration” during his first bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Washington last month.
During the January 21 meeting between Marco Rubio and EAM Jaishankar, the US readout of the meeting said that the US side “emphasized the Trump Administration’s desire to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration”.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a recent media briefing declined to put a number to how many Indians are staying illegally in the US, but said that India will take back undocumented Indian nationals.
He said: “We are against illegal immigration, especially because it is linked to several forms of organized crime. For Indians, not just in the United States but anywhere in the world, if they are Indian nationals, and they are overstaying or they are in a particular country without proper documentation, we will take them back, provided documents are shared with us so that we can verify their nationality that they are indeed Indians. If that happens to be the case, then we will take things forward, we will facilitate the return to India.”
“As part of India-U.S. migration and mobility cooperation, both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration, while also creating more avenues for legal migration from India to the U.S. We are keen to continue this cooperation. At the same time, the Government of India would need to do the required verification, including nationality of the concerned individuals before they are deported to India.”
Berlin, Feb 3,2025: U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff move against Canada, Mexico and China has sparked criticism and concern in Germany.
On Saturday, Trump ordered to impose a 25-percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10-percent tariff on Chinese goods. He also signaled that the European Union (EU) could be next, citing the bloc’s persistent trade surplus with the U.S.
While reaffirming Germany’s commitment to economic ties with the U.S., German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that the first priority should be “not to divide up the world with many tariff barriers.”
“Tariffs have never been a good idea to resolve trade policy conflicts,” Chairman of the German Christian Democratic Union Friedrich Merz said, warning of backlash in the U.S. as rising import costs would fuel inflation and hit American consumers directly.
Trump’s move would come at a high cost for Americans, Jandura said, adding, “The losers are always end consumers, who will feel the price increase at the checkout.”
German companies are also bracing for the impact, as many supply the U.S. market from Mexico, particularly in the automotive industry.
According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Mexico has been Germany’s most important investment location in Latin America for years, with total investments exceeding 45 billion U.S. dollars since the 2000s.
According to the credit rating agency S&P, Canada and Mexico produce around 5.3 million passenger cars annually, with approximately 70 percent destined for the U.S.
Importers are likely to pass most, if not all, of the price increase to consumers, S&P noted, warning that the additional costs would further strain affordability in the U.S. auto market.
Beirut, Feb 3,2025: Thousands of Lebanese participated in mass marches on Sunday, advancing toward the outskirts of towns and villages still under Israeli occupation in the eastern and central sectors of southern Lebanon, according to a local official and media reports.
Demonstrators gathered near eight border villages, including Aitaroun, Blida, Mays El Jabal, Houla, Markaba, Adaisseh, Kafr Kila, and Rab al-Thalatheen, in a renewed push for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon’s territory.
Hassan Sheet, mayor of Kafr Kila, said the marches aimed to pressure authorities — including the Lebanese army, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, and the five-member committee overseeing the ceasefire — to take decisive steps toward reclaiming occupied Lebanese territory.
He said the border residents rallied to express their determination to return to their homes despite all challenges.
Demonstrators reached the outskirts of the border villages but retreated following directives from the Lebanese army.
Tensions flared up as Israeli forces responded to the demonstrations with warning shots and drones. According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, an Israeli drone dropped stun grenades and fired warning shots at residents from the village of Yaroun, while Israeli forces also opened fire at protesters in Adaisseh. No injuries were reported.
The protests come as Lebanese citizens got frustrated by Israel’s failure to meet the withdrawal deadline outlined in its ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. The deal, which took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, stipulated that Israeli forces should withdraw from Lebanese territory within 60 days, allowing the Lebanese army to assume control of the border region and enforce a ban on armed presence south of the Litani River.
However, Israel announced late last month that it would not comply with the agreed withdrawal deadline and instead would proceed with the phased withdrawal in full coordination with the United States.
In response, Lebanon’s caretaker government approved an extension of the initial 60-day ceasefire implementation until Feb. 18 but expressed its rejection of any attempts to further delay the process.
Jan 31,2025: Myanmar’s ruling military has extended a state of emergency for another six months, state media reported on Friday, a day ahead of the four-year anniversary of a coup that plunged the country into chaos after a decade of tentative democracy.
Myanmar has been locked in a civil war triggered by the military’s overthrow of the elected civilian government of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.
The junta plans this year to hold an election, which critics have derided as a sham to keep the generals in power through proxies.
“There are still more tasks to be done to hold the general election successfully. Especially for a free and fair election, stability and peace is still needed,” state- run MRTV said on its Telegram channel in announcing the extension of emergency rule.
No date has been set for the election but the junta is forging ahead with plans, despite struggling to run the country as it tries to fend off on multiple fronts an armed rebellion with its roots in a youth-led uprising that was put down by the military with deadly force.`
Jan31,2025: All 64 people aboard the American Eagle flight that took off from Wichita, Kansas, including 60 passengers and four crew members, and all three soldiers aboard the helicopter were killed when the two aircraft slammed into each other on Wednesday night, causing a fiery explosion.
The plane carrying 64 collided midair with a military helicopter as it was approaching Reagan National Airport in Washington DC on Wednesday evening.
The Wednesday night disaster caused both aircraft to tumble into the icy Potomac River, killing 67 passengers and crew.
US investigators said Thursday it will take time to understand the cause of a deadly midair collision between a passenger jet and a military helicopter.
Investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from American Eagle flight 5342, an American Airlines flight operated by PSA, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced late on Thursday. The recorders are now at the NTSB’s labs for evaluation. Board member Todd Inman said officials aimed to release a preliminary report into the incident within 30 days.
“We conduct an important safety mission where we take a very careful approach,” National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chair Jennifer Homendy told journalists. “We look at facts… and that will take some time.”
NTSB board member Todd Inman likewise said there would be no immediate conclusions on the cause of the disaster.
