President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition of one of the convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape case. Sources have told India Today that the Rashtrapati Bhavan has communicated the decision of the President to the Union Home Ministry.
The Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier in the day forwarded the mercy petition of convict Mukesh Singh to the President, recommending its rejection, officials had said.
All-rounder Irfan Pathan announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Saturday, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious career which included a World Twenty20 triumph.
The 35-year-old left-arm seamer played 29 tests, 120 one dayers and 24 T20Is for India, picking a total of 301 international wickets.
“I have been fortunate to share the dressing room with greats of the game like (Sourav) Ganguly, (Rahul) Dravid and (VVS) Laxman. I am calling time on my career,” Pathan announced on broadcaster Star Sports.
Pathan’s biggest contribution to Indian cricket came in the game’s shortest format as he was named man-of-the-match in the World T20 final against Pakistan in 2007. He took three crucial wickets as India lifted the trophy in Johannesburg.
He is one of three Indian bowlers to have claimed a test hat-trick and the first in the world to claim it in the first over of the match.
“I will keep contributing to Indian cricket, but it is always better if someone else takes my place in domestic cricket,” Pathan added.
All 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have requested the HRD Ministry to exempt them from reserving positions in the teaching staff for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).
The premier business schools, which currently do not offer reservation in teaching positions, have been asked by the Ministry to provide quota in faculty positions for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates.
According to officials, the B-schools have made the request saying they adopt a fair recruitment process and give equal opportunities to all, including disadvantaged sections of society.
The IIMs have so far been following the 1975-order of the Department of Personnel & Training that exempted scientific and technical posts from the reservation policy. IIM- Ahmedabad is caught in a battle on the issue in the high court.
In November 2019, the Human Resource Development Ministry wrote to all institutes to ensure implementation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers’ Cadre) Act.
A separate communication was sent to all IIMs on Wednesday to ensure ‘reservation of posts in direct recruitment’, considering the institute as a unit as specified in the Act that came into effect on March 7, 2019.
