New Delhi, Jan 22,2025: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved minimum support price (MSP) of raw jute for marketing season 2025-26 at Rs 5,650 per quintal, an increase of Rs 315 per quintal over previous marketing season.
The hike in raw jute MSP ensures return of 66.8% over all India weighted average cost of production.
“The government has increased the MSP of raw jute from Rs 2,400 per quintal in 2014-15 to Rs 5,650 per quintal in 2025-26, registering a 2.35 times increase,” a government statement said.
Briefing media on Cabinet decisions, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the Union Cabinet also approved continuation of the government’s flagship National health Mission (NHM) for another five years.
Goyal noted that the NHM had met historic targets over the years.
The NHM was launched in 2005 with the objective of building public health systems to provide accessible, affordable and quality health care to the rural population, especially the vulnerable groups, up to the District Hospitals (DH) level.
The implementation strategy of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under NHM is to provide financial and technical support to States/Union Territories (UTs) enabling them to provide accessible, affordable, accountable, and effective healthcare upto District Hospitals (DHs), especially to the poor and vulnerable sections of the population.
As per official release, the NHM has engaged over 12 lakh additional healthcare workers between FY 2021-24. Also, 220 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered nationwide under the mission.
Monday,Jan 13,2025: The 45-day Mahakumbh Mela (earlier known as Purna Kumbh) began on Monday on the banks of Sangam in Prayagraj with a million devotees expected to take a dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The Uttar Pradesh government forecasts 400 million visitors between January 13 and February 26, preparing for a logistical challenge of massive proportions.
Although some estimates remain more conservative, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state officials project that Mahakumbh 2025 could generate Rs 25,000 crore in government revenues and result in a Rs 2 trillion economic spinoff. The event is expected to benefit local self-help groups, artisans, hoteliers, homestay owners, restaurant operators, and food vendors, with major brands such as Dabur, Mother Dairy, and ITC anticipated to spend Rs 3,000 crore.
Official estimates are that the 2019 Kumbh saw participation of 240 million devotees, while the 2013 Purna Kumbh at what was then known as Allahabad had 120 million visitors. The 2016 Kumbh at Ujjain had 75 million devotees visit it.
The Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in UP has launched 549 projects, ranging from infrastructure to sanitation, for the Mahakumbh worth Rs 6,900 crore. In 2019, it had launched 700 projects at a cost of Rs 3,700 crore.
The state government has made elaborate arrangements to ensure that the Mahakumbh Mela passes off without any untoward incidents. The successful management of the fair is a crucial part of its narrative to build “brand UP” to achieve its objective of becoming a $ 1 trillion economy.
Lucknow, Dec 15,2024: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that while 40 crore devotees are expected to attend the 45-day Prayagraj Maha Kumbh (from January 13 to February 26), arrangements are being made to accommodate 100 crore devotees.
The CM said that On January 29, during the main Muhurta of Mauni Amavasya, an estimated six crore devotees will take a holy dip, but preparations are being made for 10 crore devotees.
He said, “The Maha Kumbh will feature extensive facilities, including 12 km of ghats and an expanded area spanning 10,000 acres. Devotees will have the opportunity to experience the darshan of Char Dham, Dwadash Jyotirlingas, and other significant Jyotirlingas. The event will integrate cutting-edge technology, such as an AI-based Bhashini app in 11 Indian languages, allowing visitors to access information about the Kumbh and services like Khoya-Paya in their preferred language.”
Yogi said, “The government plans to implement a precise headcount of every attendee and ensure a sustainable, eco-friendly event. The Mahakumbh will feature zero liquid discharge systems, 1.50 lakh toilets, and a ban on single-use plastics. This grand event aims to set a benchmark and drive Uttar Pradesh’s roadmap for economic prosperity.”
The CM criticised those who try to suppress the truth or tarnish cultural events like the Kumbh, emphasising that voices of truth often face threats and efforts to silence them.
Yogi highlighted the remarkable transformation of the 2019 Prayagraj Kumbh, stating that it redefined expectations. “Anyone who witnessed the Kumbh of 2019 would have seen the out-of-the-box efforts that made it clean, safe, and well-organised.
What was once associated with dirt, chaos, stampedes, and insecurity became a divine and grand event,” he said.
The Chief Minister credited the success of the 2019 Kumbh to its high standards of cleanliness, management, and security, noting that it was so exemplary that Prime Minister Narendra Modi washed the feet of sanitation workers in appreciation. “It is part of India’s heritage to express gratitude to those who contribute to its success,” he said.
Yogi said, “The upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025 will showcase a unique confluence of faith and modernity.”
New Delhi, Dec 12,2024: The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared the ‘One Nation One Election’ Bill, evoking sharp reactions from Opposition parties which dubbed it as an attempt to damage federalism.
The proposed law provides for holding simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and the state assemblies in the first phase while covering the local bodies in the second stage.
The clearance by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet paves the way for the bill’s introduction in Parliament shortly.
The ‘One Nation One Election’ tops the agenda of the Modi government which has vowed to implement it in its current term.
The government had in 2023 set up a committee under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind to suggest how elections to the Lok Sabha, Assemblies, and municipalities could be held simultaneously.
In September this year, the Union Cabinet approved the recommendations of the Kovind panel which advised holding simultaneous elections subject to nationwide consensus on the proposal.
Reacting to the Cabinet decision today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “The Union Cabinet has approved introducing the draconian ‘One Nation, One Election Bill’ in Parliament. This impractical and anti-democratic move will erase regional voices, erode federalism, and disrupt governance. Rise up INDIA! Let us resist this attack on Indian Democracy with all our strength!”
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the grand old party’s views on the subject had been forcefully articulated by its President Mallikarjun Kharge on January 17.
“Nothing has happened since then to modify them,” he stated.
Calling it impossible, Kharge had said that the move would require consensus of Parliament.
“A reform of this scale cannot be imposed unilaterally; it demands a broad consensus,” the Congress President had said earlier.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee vehemently opposed the proposal.
“The Union Cabinet has bulldozed their way through with the unconstitutional and anti-federal One Nation, One Election Bill, ignoring every legitimate concern raised by experts and opposition leaders. This is not a carefully-considered reform; it’s an authoritarian imposition designed to undermine India’s democracy and federal structure. Our MPs will oppose this draconian legislation tooth and nail in Parliament. Bengal will NEVER bow to Delhi’s dictatorial whims. This fight is about saving India’s democracy from the clutches of autocracy!” she posted on ‘X’.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also opposed the move and said, “They have the majority, they can take any decision…This is their agenda. They will work on their agenda, we will work on our agenda.”
