LONDON, June8,2022: Growing food shortages may represent the same health threat to the world as the COVID-19 pandemic, a leading global health figure has warned.
Rising food and energy prices, in part sparked by the war in Ukraine, could kill millions both directly and indirectly, Peter Sands, the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.
“Food shortages work in two ways. One is you have the tragedy of people actually starving to death. But second is you have the fact that often much larger numbers of people are poorly nourished, and that makes them more vulnerable to existing diseases,” he said.
He said efforts to improve pandemic preparedness should not make the “classic” mistake of concerning themselves only with crises that resemble the most recent threat the world has faced.
“It’s not as well-defined as some brand new pathogen appearing with distinctive new symptoms. But it could well be just as deadly,” he said.
The World Health Organization estimates that 15 million people may have died as a result of COVID-19.
Sands said investment was needed to strengthen health systems to help prepare for the repercussions of food shortages, which is part of the Global Fund’s remit.
The Geneva, Switzerland-based fund is aiming to raise $18 billion to boost health systems, fight the three core diseases in its title, and reverse setbacks caused by the pandemic. It has raised just over a third of its target for 2024-2026.
June,07,2022:India on Monday hit out at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) after it condemned the derogatory comments made by two BJP leaders on Prophet Muhammed and Islam.
The official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, said the OIC’s comments are “misleading and mischievous”. India’s strong response came while several countries, including India’s crucial Gulf partner, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and security partners Oman and Jordan condemned the remarks. The UAE urged India to foster “mutual coexistence”.
In a strongly worded response, Mr. Bagchi said the OIC should stop its “communal approach” and said “it is regrettable that the OIC Secretariat has yet again chosen to make motivated, misleading and mischievous comments. This only exposes its divisive agenda being pursued at the behest of vested interests.”
Nupur Sharma complains of death threat
Earlier the General Secretariat of the OIC “strongly condemned” the derogatory remarks and connected them with other internal developments in India. “These abuses come in the context of the escalation of hatred and abuse of Islam in India and in the context of the systematic practices against Muslims and restrictions on them,” the OIC had said in its statement.
‘Pak. a serial violator of rights’
The official spokesperson’s strongest response was for the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif who had urged the world to “severely reprimand India” and take note of the offensive comments and said, “Our love for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is supreme. All Muslims can sacrifice their life for the Love & Respect of their Holy Prophet (PBUH).”
Responding to the comment, Mr. Bagchi said, “The absurdity of a serial violator of minority rights commenting on the treatment of minorities in another nation is not lost on anyone. The world has been witness to the systemic persecution of minorities, including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Ahmadiyyas, by Pakistan.”
Continuing the international outrage, the UAE on Monday condemned the comments that insulted the Prophet of Islam. The remarks from the UAE is an important turn in the controversy as the country has recently concluded a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India and is a crucial aviation and investment destination for the country. “The Ministry underscored the need to respect religious symbols and not violate them, as well as confront hate speech and violence,” a comment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE said.
More nations protest
While Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, and Kuwait condemned the derogatory remarks on Sunday, Bahrain, Pakistan, Taliban of Afghanistan, the UAE, Jordan, Oman and the Maldives issued condemnations on Monday.
Global outrage continues over BJP leaders’ communal remarks
Nupur Sharma and Navin Kumar Jindal, the two figures who had uttered those comments, were stripped of their responsibilities by the BJP once Qatar and Kuwait became the first countries to protest against the offensive remarks about the Prophet.
The MEA has been maintaining that “strong action has already been taken against these individuals by relevant bodies.” While the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have condemned the offensive statements individually, GCC Secretary General Dr. Nayef Falah M. Al Hajraf too “rejected and denounced the statements” against the Prophet of Islam.
Indonesia too has condemned the comments. “This message has been conveyed to the Indian Ambassador in Jakarta,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia in an announcement.
Both Qatar and Kuwait summoned Indian ambassadors and lodged formal protests on Sunday and asked for public apology from India. In response, the Embassy of India in Doha described Ms. Sharma and Mr. Jindal as “fringe elements”.
However, the MEA adopted a different approach while dealing with comments from Pakistan and the generally pro-Pakistan OIC. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Qatar, which was overshadowed by the controversy came to an end on Monday evening, with the Indian side highlighting 3Cs, “culture, cuisine and cinema” that connect both sides.
June 07,2022: Russia should not close the US embassy despite the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine because the world’s two biggest nuclear powers must continue to talk, the US ambassador to Moscow has been quoted as saying.
When asked whether the two countries’ embassies could be shut down, John Sullivan told the Russian state news agency TASS on Monday that such a move would be “a big mistake”.
President Vladimir Putin has presented the invasion of Ukraine as a turning point in Russian history: a revolt against the hegemony of the United States, which the president says has humiliated Russia since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union.
Ukraine – and its Western allies – says it is fighting for its survival against a reckless imperial-style land grab which has killed thousands, displaced more than 10 million people and reduced swathes of the country to wasteland.
In a clear attempt to send a message to the Kremlin, Sullivan, who was appointed US ambassador by President Donald Trump, told TASS that Washington and Moscow should not break off diplomatic relations.

Bejing,June 04,2022: China will launch a spacecraft on Sunday carrying three astronauts to the core module of the unfinished Chinese space station, where they will work and live for six months as construction enters advanced stages.
A Long March-2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-14 spacecraft is set to blast off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the northwestern province of Gansu at 10:44 a.m. local time (0244 GMT) on Sunday, a China Manned Space Agency official told a news conference on Saturday.
Mission commander Chen Dong will be accompanied by Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe aboard Shenzhou, meaning “Divine Vessel” in Chinese.
“All preparations for the launch are basically ready,” said Lin Xiqiang, an agency official.
Shenzhou-14 will be the third of four crewed missions – and the seventh of a total of 11 missions – needed to complete the space station by the end of the year.
China began constructing its three-module space station in April 2021 with the launch of Tianhe – the first and biggest of the station’s three modules.
Tianhe, slightly larger than a metro bus, will form the living quarters of visiting astronauts once the T-shaped space station is completed.
Following Shenzhou-14, the remaining two modules – the laboratory cabins Wentian and Mengtian – will be launched in July and October, respectively.
Wentian will feature a robotic arm, an airlock cabin for trips outside of the station, and living quarters for an additional three astronauts during crew rotations.
The Shenzhou-14 crew will help with the setup of Wentian and Mengtian and conduct functionality tests on both modules.
The space station will have a designed lifespan of a decade. At 180 tonnes, it will be slightly heavier than Russia’s decommissioned Mir, and about 20% of the International Space Station by mass.
