This had miffed Alagiri who had announced a split from the party fold after Karunanidhi did not allot him any important task during the last state election that was won by a landslide by Jayalalitha’s AIADMK.
Guwahati, Oct 24 : Guwahati became the fifth Indian city to be ratified as a venue for next year’s Under-17 football World Cup after a FIFA inspection team gave its thumbs up to the venue’s preparedness and facilities.
The FIFA delegation along with members of the Local Organising Committee visited the site and had a comprehensive look at the stadium and the training facilities.
Tournament Director of the LOC, Mr Javier Ceppi said, “We have a very good understanding with the newly elected State Government and that has certainly helped to push matters forward in Guwahati.”
“They realise the importance of hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 and have given us their complete support, which has had an immediate impact on the pace of work in the last 45 days. We also believe, as the State Government does, that this event will be critical in the Chief Minister s vision of making Assam the sports hub of India.”
Also present at the press conference was Ajay Tiwari, Sports Secretary for the Government of Assam.
Pleased with the prospect of being one of the hosts for the big event, Tiwari said, “The state government has been putting in a lot of efforts to upgrade the stadium as well as the practice sites.”
“I am elated at the recognition being bestowed upon us by FIFA and at the prospect of the state hosting a football World Cup.”
Delegates from the football’s governing body were satisfied with the conditions in Guwahati, both on the pitch as well as in the training facilities of IGAI training ground, Nehru Stadium, LNIPE Ground and SAI Regional Centre.
Event manager for the U-17 World Cup, Ms Marion Mayer Vorfelder remarked, “From what I am being told, the enthusiasm for the sport here in this part of the country is unmatched.
“Football is like a religion here and considering how passionate people are about the sport here, this ratification denotes a win not just for the state of the Assam but the entire North East.”
Earlier, Kochi, Navi Mumbai, Goa and New Delhi had got the FIFA’s nod. The 23-member strong delegation will travel to Kolkata tomorrow to visit the last venue of its inspection trip and assess the situation in the capital of Bengal.
A 36-year-old Egyptian woman, believed to be the fattest female in the world, has reached 500 kgs weight, according to media reports. Imran Ahmad Abdulati, who is Alexandria in northern Egypt, has not left her home for 25 years – since she was 11-years-old – because of her weight problem.
After years of desperate attempts to deal with the issue, her sister Chaymaa’ Ahmad Abdulati has now gone public with the problem in the hope of getting help, the media report said. Iman currently lives in the family home with her sister and mother.
Her family believe she suffered a stroke at the age of 11 which left her bed-ridden and piling on weight. She needs help going to the toilet as she can no longer walk there herself. Iman was born weighing a staggering five kilograms.
She was diagnosed with elephantiasis – a parasitic infection that causes extreme swelling in a person’s limbs and arms. Relatives also say medics have previously stated her problem may have been caused by by a fluid retention problem which means a large amount of extra water is being retained in her body. It is feared she may die if she cannot be moved to a hospital in Cairo for emergency surgery. She never attended school because of her weight problem.
New Delhi : With deals over USD 12 billion in kitty this month, including leasing of a second nuclear submarine, Russia hopes to bag more projects as it termed itself as not just a business partner but an “ally” who stood by India in its “darkest hours”.
Russia is eying the multi-billion dollar deal for P75-I project of India under which six conventional submarines are to be built with Air Independent Propulsion systems and the next aircraft carrier project besides the deal to jointly develop a fifth generation fighter aircraft.
Asserting that there is no limit to what India and Russia can do together, a top Russian defense official claimed the US and Europeans can never give what Moscow can and has offered.
“We are ready not just to deliver most serious weapons, most important weapons but continue to give our state of art technology,” Sergei Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation, an umbrella organisation of 700 hi-tech civilian and military firms, told PTI.
“Russia is a friend, an ally and not a business partner.
Russia stood by India during its darkest hours. Next year will mark 70 years of our relationship. It is a long time,” he said and noted that Russia had stood by India when it faced sanctions after the 1998 nuclear tests.
“Not so in the recent past, when India was under sanctions, we were pretty much the only partner for India.
“Russia has been a partner not only in every day military supplies but also most sensitive and most important supplies including a nuclear submarine which was rented to India for you to use,” said Chemezov who is also a close aide of Russian President Vladmir Putin.
“Come to think about it, I would not imagine any other country to do that, he said. Not in the past or in the future.
I cannot imagine US or Europe giving India such a strategic asset,” he said when asked about the tough competition that US and Europe are giving to Russia in the Indian defence market.
Lucknow/New Delhi : As fissures in Samajwadi Party deepened, BJP today demanded that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav prove his majority in the Assembly or resign, labelling the party as “a sinking ship” which has failed on every front.
“CM Akhilesh Yadav should resign or prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly,” UP BJP chief Keshav Prasad Maurya told reporters in Lucknow hours after Akhilesh sacked four pro-Amar Singh ministers, including his uncle Shivpal Yadav, from his government.
Seeking to fish in troubled waters, Maurya said Governor Ram Naik should ask Akhilesh to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly and till he did so, he should not take any policy decision.
“A government reduced to minority should not take any policy decision,” he said.
In New Delhi, BJP national secretary Shrikant Sharma said the fast-paced developments within the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led party has “exposed” Akhilesh as he exuded confidence that the people of the poll-bound state will now evince faith in the NDA major as “change is inevitable” there.
“The ongoing theatrics within SP is an exercise of shrouding their sins. The party has become a sinking ship which has failed on every front. Mafia raj prevailed during Akhilesh’s tenure. He could not keep promises of providing roads, electricity, drinking water. Even healthcare is in doldrums,” Sharma said.
He said that the people elected Akhilesh with a “lot of hopes” after witnessing “rampant” corruption and lawlessness during the previous BSP regime.
“But now he stands exposed, impelling them to engage in such theatrics. However, change is inevitable in Uttar Pradesh. The people of the state are set to evince trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah in the forthcoming polls,” Sharma said.
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who recently joined BJP after quitting Congress, said the Samajwadi Party was on the verge of a split as in the coming days the differences would widen and there would be no bridging among leaders of the ruling party.
The crisis within SP deepened after Akhilesh sacked Shivpal Yadav, Narad Rai and Om Prakash Singh (Cabinet ministers) and Minister of State (Independent Charge) Sayeda Shadab Fatima.
At least two organisations working for the rights of Muslims have alleged their women are being forced to sign a form supporting ‘triple talaq’, even as a signature war erupted in the community in support and against the Islamic way of divorce.
While the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has launched a nationwide drive to collect signatures of people “to save and protect Shariat Laws” — related to marriage, divorce and inheritance, women’s rights groups have come up with a counter-campaign.
The signature war comes against the backdrop of the Law Commission’s move to get feedback on the contentious Uniform Civil Code, a set of identical civil laws, and agovernment affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing ‘triple talaq’ and polygamy among Muslims on the ground that they discriminate against women.
Under ‘triple talaq’, a man can divorce his wife by saying the Urdu word three times.
Patna schoolteacher Shagoofta Khatoon said her sister’s in-laws have asked all women in the family to sign forms distributed at the local mosque.
“She has a family to look after. It’s not easy to defy the men in our society,” Khatoon, who has filed a case in a Patna court against her husband for divorcing her, said.
Shaista Amber, the president of the All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board, said her organisation was getting scores of such complaints, “mainly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh”. Formed in 2005, Amber’s organisation works for women’s rights.
“Our members are distributing forms to women asking whether these discriminatory practices should be banned. We will submit them to the Supreme Court and Law Commission of India.”
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, an advocacy organisation, had announced on October 13 its decision to boycott the Law Commission’s exercise and resist the Centre’s attempt to replace diverse customary laws governing marriage, divorce and inheritance with the Uniform Civil Code.
India has separate sets of personal laws for each religion, and demand for overhauling these codes date back decades.
Mumbai-based Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan too has launched a signature campaign for a ban on customs such as ‘triple talaq’.
“The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is indulging in fear-mongering. Muslim women are not against Shariat but are fighting against discriminatory practices. We are going to send a huge number of forms putting the voice of Muslim women to the Law Commission,” Zakia Somani, a member of the organisation, told .
The Muslim law board, for its part, downplayed the campaign by women’s organisations.
“They are free to carry out whatever campaign they want. We are not stopping them… but they are just trying to create confusion in people’s mind,” said Kamal Farooqui, a member.
Farooqui said the matter was “purely religious and the Supreme Court has no right to interfere”.
A secret Nazi military base in the Arctic has been discovered by Russian scientists.
The site – located on the island of Alexandra Land 1,000km from the North Pole 0150 was constructed in 1942, a year after Adolf Hitler invaded Russia.
It was codenamed “Schatzgraber” or “Treasure Hunter” by the Germans and was primarily used as a tactical weather station.
The base was abandoned when the scientists stationed there were poisoned by polar bear meat in 1944 and had to be rescued by a German U-boat.
It has been rediscovered 72 years later and more than 500 objects have been found, including a batch of well preserved documents, the Daily Mail reported.
The ruins of bunkers, rusted bullets and other relics dating from the Second World War have been discovered at the site, many of which remain in a good condition having been preserved by the cold weather.
The island was vital during the Second World War as the meterological reports it produced were essential for planning the movement of troops, submarines and ships.
The name given to the base has led some to believe it may have had another secret mission – with some specialists speculating that it might have been used for the pursuit of ancient relics.
Alexandra Land was a disputed territory for a number of years but is now part of the Russian Federation.
Russia is thought to be looking to build its own permanent military base there today.
Nepal prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday reiterated readiness to participate in China’s ambitious “One Belt, One Road” initiative, saying his country wanted to be benefited from the endeavour.
The prime minister, at his meeting with the Chinese minister of state administration for industry and commerce Zhang Mao, expressed confidence that the development project could benefit the land-locked country.
The Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiatives are aimed at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa, along the ancient trade routes of Silk Road.
The prime minister assured their active participation in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s pet projects. “Relationship between Nepal and China has remained trouble-free for ages and needs to be further strengthened. I believe that frequent exchanges of high-level visits help to enhance our ties,” foreign relations advisor to the Prime Minister Rishi Raj Adhikari quoted Dahal.
The visiting Chinese minister lauded the conducive environment for Chinese companies and the timely implementation of Nepal-China joint projects. With nearly three billion people inhabiting areas covered by the proposed economic belt, it represents the biggest market in the world with unparalleled potential.
New Delhi, Oct 21 : As many as 1,100 retrenched Indians are expected to return to India in the coming weeks with Saudi government issuing exit visas to the Saad group workers, according to External Affairs Ministry.
Minister of State V K Singh, who is currently in Saudi Arabia to ensure return of the jobless workers, also thanked the Saudi government for its cooperation and help in solving the issue of stranded Indians there.
“Saudi govt has begun giving exit visas to Saad group workers. The first lot of four left yesterday. Minister of State met the Saudi Vice Minister for Labour and Social development yesterday. Total of 1100 Indian workers of Saad are expected to return to India in coming weeks,” an MEA official said.
Thousands of Indian workers have lost their jobs due to slowdown in Saudi economy, triggered by low oil prices and cut in spending by the government.
MoS Singh had made a number of visits to that country in last few months to help the jobless Indians and ensure return of those who wanted to come back.
The Indian government had earlier requested the Saudi authorities to give the unemployed Indian workers exit visas without NoC (No-Objection Certificate) from employers and also urged it to clear the dues of workers who have not been paid for months, whenever they settle the accounts with the companies concerned.
As per rules, no foreign employee can leave the country without NoC by the employers.
Farming began again after 10 years at Tata Motors’ demolished Nano car plant site in India’s Singur with the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee sprinkling mustard seeds on the land.
In August this year, India’s apex court had quashed the allotment of land by the former CPI(M)-led state government in India’s eastern state of West Bengal to automobile giant Tata Motors 2006 ruling that proper procedures had not been followed while acquiring the land and that the acquisition was no longer valid.
The controversial plant was shifted to the state of Gujarat in 2008 after protests by farmers and the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress party that is currently ruling the state.
The physical possession of 103 acres of land was given to 298 farmers within the 12-week deadline set by the division bench of justices Arun Mishra and V Gopala Gowda of the Supreme Court on August 31.
“Most of the portion of the Nano car shed has been razed to the ground. Only a small structure is left which will also be demolished in next few days,” a senior state government official told PTI.
Banerjee, who had steered a massive agitation against the “forcible” acquisition of land in 2006, said, “Singur will be a model before the world and a monument will be constructed here”, PTI reported.
“Except for 65 acres, the rest of the 997 acres of land is ready to be handed over to the farmers. By November 10, the process of giving physical possession of the entire land would be complete.”
Banerjee spoke to the farmers and enquired about the condition of the land and the kind of crops they plan to harvest in days to come. She also handed over crop kits to some farmers.
Last month Banerjee had given ‘parchas’, documents establishing the ownership of a farmer over a piece of land in revenue records, and cheques to farmers in Singur.
