The United Nations has made clear that climate action “is unstoppable”, as Donald Trump weighs whether the US should remain in the Paris climate deal.
According to White House sources cited by the press, the President is expected to withdraw from the agreement sometime this week, but Mr Trump did not confirm this during a spray in the Oval Office with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
When asked by a reporter if he was leaning toward exiting the accord, Mr Trump responded, “You’re going to find out very soon”.
Despite reports that the US is poised to withdraw from the deal, other countries, including India, China and the EU have reaffirmed their commitment to combatting global warming.
In a morning tweet, the UN wrote that “Climate change is undeniable. Climate action is unstoppable. Climate solutions provide opportunities that unmatchable.”
The tweet linked to a video of UN Secretary-General António Guterres calling on world leaders, including those in business and civil society, to take ambitious action on climate change.
“It is absolutely essential that the world implements the Paris agreement,” Mr Guterres said, adding that he would use the convening power of the UN to work with governments and all major actors to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
In a speech on Tuesday at an event in New York, Mr Guterres said, “It’s very clear that governments are not everything.”
“On the other hand, we are doing our best, in dialogue with the administration and with Congress, to make the US understand that funding the development aid, funding foreign policy in general, funding organizations like the UN, is also in the interest of the American people.“
A US withdrawal from the Paris accord would be a huge blow to the deal that aims to reduce carbon emissions and avert the worst effects of climate change.
The US is currently one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the world. Scientists say that Earth is likely to to be affected by more dangerous levels of warming even sooner if the US pulls back from its pledge to cut carbon dioxide pollution.
A powerful bomb hidden in a sewage tanker exploded in the morning rush hour in the centre of the Afghan capital on Wednesday, police said, killing at least 80 people, wounding hundreds and damaging embassy buildings. The victims appeared mainly to have been Afghan civilians.
The bomb, one of the deadliest in Kabul and coming at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, exploded close to the fortified entrance to the German embassy, wounding some staff, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said. Pictures showed the embassy building with its windows ripped out.
One Afghan security guard was killed and others were likely among the dead, Gabriel said. A spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry said the bomber’s target was unknown. “Such attacks do not change our resolve in continuing to support the Afghan government in the stabilisation of the country,” Gabriel said.
New Delhi, May 31 : Four men have been jailed for their entire life by a Delhi court for murdering a 20-year-old youth by brutally stabbing him 29 times after kidnapping him for ransom.
The court said inflicting 29 incised knife injuries showed that the convicts not only wanted to kill the victim, Raju Roy, but also deliver pain and suffering.
Additional Sessions Judge Virender Kumar Bansal awarded imprisonment till the remainder of their lives to convicts Biplav Biswas, Deepak, Hardeep and Deepak, all residents of Mangol Puri in North Delhi.
“Life imprisonment shall mean remainder of their natural life,” the court made it clear in its 186-page verdict.
The court said Biswas, a close friend of Roy, had betrayed the victim’s trust and conspired to kidnap him for a ransom and murdered him.
“This was possible because Biswas called him (victim) there and thereafter sent the victim with the accused persons.
It was only due to conspiracy of Biswas that it was possible,” the court said.
The convicts wanted to raise ransom from Roy’s father who was a medical practitioner and used to run a clinic here.
“The murder was also committed with brutality as pointed out by the prosecutor for the State by inflicting 29 incised wounds which shows that convicts not only wanted to kill him but kill him by giving him pain and sufferings,” it said.
The four men were held guilty of the offenses of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping for ransom, robbery and murder.
The court acquitted them of the charge of destruction of evidence, saying there was no evidence that they did it.
It imposed a fine of Rs 3.10 lakh on Biswas, Rs 2.10 lakh each on the other three convicts and directed that the amount be given to the victim’s parents.
New Delhi : The Bhoomi Adhikar Andolan has approached President Pranab Mukherjee seeking rehabilitation of those affected by the Sardar Sarovar project in Madhya Pradesh in line with a Supreme Court order.
The Bhoomi Adhikar Andolan (BAA) is an umbrella body of various organisations working on issues relating to land acquisition.
The delegation comprising BAA leaders including former Lok Sabha MP Hannan Mollah met Mukherjee yesterday and accused the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government of “forcibly” trying to evict people living in the dam area before July 31.
The delegation requested the president to direct the state government to provide alternative livelihood, respect the rights of fish workers on reservoir among others.
“We urged the president to direct the Shivraj Chouhan-led government to re-survey the affected people and give priority to rehabilitation of all families first following the SC order,” Mollah told reporters here.
The apex court had on February 8 cleared the decks for monetary compensation for the oustees of the Sardar Sarovar project by ordering Rs 60 lakh for each of the families which are likely to be displaced.
The delegation also demanded the state government to seek advice from gram sabhas in line with section 4 of Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) (PESA) Act, 1996 to take their consent on the issue of rehabilitation sites.
The BAA leaders also asked the president to direct the government to form a committee to assess the impact on environment, river and forest by submergence and also the impact in Narmada’s downstream.
According to the advocates of Narmada Bachao Andolan, 192 villages and one township would be affected by the project in Madhya Pradesh alone, and that about 45,000 affected people are yet to be rehabilitated.
Nasa is set to make a major announcement about its first mission “to touch the sun”.
The agency wants to send a spacecraft closer to the sun than ever before, where it will face extreme temperatures and radiation levels. It will speak about Solar Probe Plus at an event on Wednesday.
The spacecraft, which is set to take off in the summer of 2018, will be tasked with collecting data about the mechanisms that heat the corona, the outermost part of the sun’s atmosphere.
For reasons currently unknown, the corona is hundreds of times hotter than the sun’s surface, with temperatures at 500,000 degrees Celsius or higher.
It’s also behind the solar wind, a constant stream of charged particles that can impact life on Earth.
“Placed in orbit within four million miles of the sun’s surface, and facing heat and radiation unlike any spacecraft in history, the spacecraft will explore the sun’s outer atmosphere and make critical observations that will answer decades-old questions about the physics of how stars work,” said Nasa.
“The resulting data will improve forecasts of major space weather events that impact life on Earth, as well as satellites and astronauts in space.”
The spacecraft will have to withstand temperatures of up to 1,400 degrees Celsius, which it plans to do with the help of an 11.5cm-thick carbon composite shield.

New Delhi, May 29 : Sports Minister Vijay Goel today made it clear that the government will not allow any bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan till the time “cross-border terrorism” does not stop.
The minister’s firm statement comes on a day the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board are meeting in Dubai to discuss their bilateral ties, which have remained suspended since 2012 due to diplomatic tensions after terror attacks in India.
“BCCI should speak to the government before giving any proposal to Pakistan. I have made it clear that bilateral cricket with Pakistan is not possible till the time there is cross-border terror. We have, however, no say on multilateral events (ICC tournaments),” Goel told reporters here.
The PCB has already sent a legal notice to BCCI claiming damages in tune of USD 60 million (Rs 387 crore approx) for allegedly not honouring the MoU that had stated five bilateral series in the cycle between 2015-2023.
It is learnt that the BCCI officials led by joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary will explain to their PCB counterparts that the series can’t be held without government permission and would also request them to withdraw the case.
If Pakistan refuses to budge, it is learnt that now way will BCCI pay any compensation in this case.
The cash-strapped PCB’s finances heavily depend on a series with India which would mean a financial windfall for the nation, where no international cricketing activity has taken place since terrorist attack on Sri Lankan cricket team.
Japanese researchers have developed a highly efficient catalyst for breaking resistant chemical bonds, paving the way for easier recycling of plastic waste.
According to the study, organometallic ruthenium catalysts may break down even the toughest amide bonds effectively under mild conditions. Catalysts are widely used in chemistry to help speed up reactions, but breaking the kinds of amide bonds in plastics, such as nylon, and other materials require harsh conditions and large amounts of energy.
Lead author Takashi Miura from Nagoya University said that this new ruthenium catalyst can hydrogenate difficult substrates under much milder conditions.
Hydrogenation is the key step leading to breakdown of amide bonds. The catalyst features a ruthenium atom supported in an organic framework. This ruthenium atom can adsorb hydrogen and deliver it to the amide bond to initiate the breakdown. The team probed the position of hydrogen on the catalyst in the reaction pathway and modified the shape of the supporting framework.
By making sure that the hydrogen molecule was is the best possible position for interaction with amide bonds, the team achieved much more effective hydrogenation.
Group leader Susumu Saito stated that the changes their team made to the catalyst, allowed some tricky amide bonds to be selectively cleaved for the first time.
This catalyst has great potential for making designer peptides for pharmaceutics and could also be used to recover materials from waste plastics to help realise an anthropogenic chemical carbon cycle, Saito explained.
New Delhi : Was there a second assassin of Mahatma Gandhi?
Though the police went by the theory that three bullets were fired upon him, was there a fourth bullet also which was fired by someone apart from Nathuram Godse?
These questions are among several which have been raised in a petition before the Supreme Court with a plea that there is a compelling need to uncover the larger conspiracy behind the murder of Mahatma by constituting a new Commission of Inquiry.
The petition also raises questions about the investigation into Gandhi’s murder suggesting whether it was one of the biggest cover-up in history and also whether there was any basis to blame Vinayak Damodar Savarkar for his death?
The petition by Dr Pankaj Phadnis, a researcher and a trustee of Abhinav Bharat, Mumbai, has claimed that the Justice J L Kapur Commission of Inquiry set up in 1966 had not been able to unearth the entire conspiracy that culminated in the killing of the Father of the Nation.
Phadnis has also questioned the three bullet theory relied upon by various courts of law to hold the conviction of accused, including Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte, who were hanged to death on November 15, 1949, while Savarkar was given the benefit of doubt due to lack of evidence.
Inspired by Savarkar, Abinav Bharat, Mumbai, was set up in 2001 and it claims to work for the socially and economically weaker section with a focus on bridging the digital divide.
Phadnis claimed that his research and media reports of those days suggested that four bullets were pumped into Gandhi and the difference between three and four shots was material as the pistol by which Godse shot Mahatma on January 30, 1948 had a seven bullet chamber and the remaining four unspent bullets were recovered by the police.
“There was no way the fourth shot could have come from this (Godse’s) pistol. It had to be from the gun of a second assassin, no trace of whom survives in any record,” he stated in the petition.
Besides approaching the apex court, Phadnis has also shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for expunging of “adverse unfounded” remarks made by the Kapur Commission against Savarkar, whose portrait was unveiled in 2003 in the Central Hall of Parliament.
In his May 10 letter to the Prime Minister, the Mumbai resident said during his birth anniversary, “vested interests will once again unleash the bogey of apology by Savarkar to the British.”
Elaborating on his efforts, Phadnis said for the last two decades, he has been “fighting a war to unearth the truth behind horrors of partition, clear the name of Veer Savarkar and bring before the nation, true murderers of the Mahatma.
“This quest has taken me to the doors of the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Bombay High Court and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Finally I have filed a Special Leave Petition (appeal against the High Court order) in the Supreme Court,” Phadnis stated in the letter to Modi.
He has challenged the decision of the High Court which on June 6, 2016 had dismissed his PIL on two grounds, firstly, that the findings of fact have been recorded by the competent court and confirmed right up to the apex court and secondly, the Kapur Commission has submitted its report and made the observations in 1969 while the present petition has been filed after 46 years.
The petitioner said the case is one which concerns the truth behind the real hands or culprits who performed the dastardly act of Gandhi’s killing and also their hidden agenda of derailing the Great Gandhi-Jinnah People-to-People Contact that the Mahatma had planned to embark upon.
This plan was derailed because of the assassination, the consequences of which are being felt even now, he contended.
The CBSE Class XII results will be announced on May 28.
In a major relief to students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will not move the Supreme Court to challenge the Delhi High Court instructions stating that evaluation for the class 10 and 12 board exams this year should be done as per the grace marks policy.
Aiming to check high cut-offs in colleges, the CBSE had scrapped the moderation policy under which grace marks are given to the students in exams for difficult questions.
Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar, who presided over the meeting, said that proper marks should be given based on credit and added that schools should not work on giving the highest marks but the correct marks.
“It was decided that proper marks should be given on credit and schools should not work on giving highest marks but the right marks. Grace marks is a suggestion. It is a good consensus let us see how it works. Marks should be exact and fair marks should not be raised because there is competition,” he said.
In a reply to plea filed by parents and some students, the Delhi High Court earlier instructed the board to follow its ‘moderation policy’.
Under the moderation policy, students are awarded up to 15 percent extra marks in certain papers if the questions are deemed to be difficult.
