Moscow, Mar 17: The Kremlin has denounced British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson’s claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the poisoning of an ex-spy as “shocking and inexcusable.”
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies that Johnson’s statement was “shocking and inexcusable breach of diplomatic propriety.”
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that it’s “overwhelmingly likely” that Putin ordered the use of a nerve agent against former spy Sergei Skripal in the English city of Salisbury.
Peskov emphasized that “we have repeatedly said that Russia has no relation to that.” Britain has announced the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats over the poisoning, and Russia said it would respond in kind.
New Delhi, Mar 17: A group campaigning for a ‘GM-free’ India has written to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, asking it to crackdown on sale of all genetically modified food in Indian supermarkets and initiate prosecution against those violating the law.
The GM foods are not permitted to be sold under the Indian Food Safety and Standards Act.
In a letter to the Chief Executive Officer Pawan Kumar Agarwal and Chairman Ashish Bahuguna of the FSSAI, the Coalition for a GM-free India said that certain brands of imported packaged food are openly being sold.
The label on various products says ingredients could be genetically modified, in various stores in locations all over the country such as Bengaluru, Noida and Mumbai, it said.
Neither Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) nor FSSAI have not approved any of these products, Kavitha Kuruganti, co-convenor of the Coalition for a GM-Free India, said.
As mentioned by Union Health Minster in Parliament on December 29, various companies have been illegally importing and selling genetically modified soyabean and canola oil for human consumption, the group said.
“We request you to take strictest action to all those who are violating the law and ensure that un-approved products must be removed from the shelves immediately, whether in a packaged form or loose,” Kuruganti said.

Congress, which had no member from Bihar in the Rajya Sabha, would now have a member in the upper house of Parliament, following unopposed election of Akhilesh Singh.
Four BJP candidates, including two Union Ministers and a Congress aspirant, were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.

The ruling Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) will be fighting it out for four seats in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, scheduled for March 23, with five candidates in the fray for four seats.
It will be a political war of sorts between the two parties for the fourth seat with BJP assured of one seat and Congress two, based on their relative strength in the 224-member House. It will be a repeat of the previous biennial election, in which the third candidate of Congress, former IPS officer KC Ramamurthy was elected with seven rebel members of JD(S) voting for him, defying party whip and were subsequently suspended from the party.
There were talks of JD(S) seeking Congress support for the JD(S) nominee, but former prime minister H D Devegowda had ruled out such talks. Moreover, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was in no mood to have truck with the JD(S), to which he belonged to before joining the Congress. His main intention was to ensure a JD(S) defeat, according to sources close to him.
BJP has fielded two time Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who had won two terms before as an Independent. The party has strength of 43 MLAs and needs support of one Independent. A candidate has to get 44 votes to win the election.
JD(S), despite not having sufficient, has nominated businessman BK Farook once again after his loss in the previous elections.
With Samajwadi Party under pressure to give a return gift to BSP after their win in the two Lok Sabha bypolls on Wednesday, now the battle line has been drawn in the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, where 11 candidates are in the fray for 10 seats and elections for the same would be held on March 23.
After withdrawal of two BJP candidates– Vidya Sagar Sonkar and Salil Bisnoi on the last day of withdrawal on Thursday, now nine candidates of BJP and one each of SP and BSP are in the fray. Two General Secretaries of BJP state unit- Vidya Sagar Sonkar of Jaunpur and former MLA from Kanpur Sahil Bisnoi had filed their nominations at the fag end of the last day of the nomination.
The RS elections will now open for horse trading and defection. Election would be held through open ballots and members who violate the party whip, could be disqualified.
However, the Samajwadi Party, who are jubilant with bypoll results, winning both the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, are the worried lot with discussing how to give a return gift BSP chief Mayawati.
BJP had fielded eight candidates officially, including Union Finance minister Arun Jaitley, but on the last day, a businessman Anil Agarwal of Ghaziabad too filed as BJP candidate, thus forcing elections.

But now, the fate of the BSP candidate hangs in balance after BJP fielded one more candidate.

Kolkata, Mar 15 : For the third year in a row, Bengal tops the list of states in gross small savings collections, and rural Bengal fares much better than the urban centres, reveals a recently-released survey by the Union Finance Ministry.
Beating the likes of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra (in that order) for three consecutive years, data compiled by the National Savings Institute (NSI) shows Bengal collected Rs 63,392 crore from small savings schemes of post offices in FY 2016-17, surpassing its gross deposit target by a whopping Rs 6,000 crore.
This comes despite successive cuts in interest rates on small savings schemes, including Public Provident Fund, with effect from April 1, 2016.
The Bengal Government extensively used folk art groups to reach out to the rural population through street plays, kabigaan and posters.
The NSI survey reveals that rural Bengal scores much better than urban Bengal in small savings collections.
New Delhi, Mar 15: The Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai has instructed BCCI’s Anti-Corruption chief Neeraj Kumar to probe alleged corruption allegations against Mohammad Shami, surfaced during a reported telephonic conversation between the fast bowler and his wife Hasin Jahan.
Jahan has also filed a police complaint against the pacer alleging infidelity and domestic violence, resulting in BCCI withholding Shami’s central contract.
The CoA chief asked Kumar to submit a report within a week. It is to be noted that the letter nowhere mentions the word “match fixing”.
“This has reference to the various media reports pertaining to allegations against Md. Shami. The Committee of Administrators has listened to the audio recording of a telephonic conversation which it is claimed is between Md. Shami and his wife. The said audio recording is available in public domain,” Rai wrote in the letter, which is in possession of PTI.
Jahan has alleged that Shami “took money from a Pakistani woman named Alishba on the insistence of an England-based businessman Mohammad Bhai”.
“The Committee of Administrators is concerned only with such portion of the said audio recording in which the person who it is claimed is Md Shami is heard saying another person by the name of Mohammad Bhai had sent money to Md. Shami through a Pakistani lady by the name of ‘Alisba’.”
“Please investigate the above assertions/ allegations under the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code and submit a report to the Committee of Administrators with your findings as to whether there is any basis to proceed further in terms thereof.”
Rai wrote that the terms of investigation should cover (i) “the identity and antecedents of Mohammad Bhai and Alisba ; (ii) whether any money was in fact sent by the said Mohammad Bhai through the said Alisba to Md. Shami; and (iii) if yes, the purpose for which the said money was received by Md. Shami.”
The investigation will be only about the corruption allegations, Rai asserted.
“The Committee of Administrators wishes to emphasize that the investigation be limited to the above issues only and not deal with any of the other allegations against Md. Shami unless you find that the same fall within the purview of the BCCI Anti-Corruption Code,” he added.
Last week, Jahan on her facebook page alleged that Shami was cheating on her and that she was a victim of domestic violence. Shami, though has denied all the allegations, saying it was a conspiracy to defame him and ruin his career.
Lucknow/Patna, Mar 14 : In a stunning blow to the BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections, the party today lost bypolls to all three Lok Sabha seats it contested, including its bastion Gorakhpur, and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh, besides Araria in Bihar.
The shocker for the BJP came days after its surprise win in three northeastern states, including Tripura, where it scripted history, demolishing the Left citadel of 25 years and forming its first government in the state. Together with its regional allies, the BJP also formed its governments in Nagaland and Meghalaya.
A consolidation of OBC, Dalit and Muslim votes powered Samajwadi Party candidates to victory in Gorakhpur, a seat represented by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for five successive terms, and Phulpur, which elected his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
Samajwadi Party’s Pravin Nishad defeated BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,961 votes in Gorakhpur, the seat which was with the party since 1989, while Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel of SP clinched the Phulpur seat drubbing the saffron party’s Kaushalendra Singh Patel by 59,460 votes.
Lalu Prasad’s RJD retained the Araria Lok Sabha seat where its nominee Sarfaraz Alam beat BJP’s Pradeep Kumar Singh by over 60,000 votes, in a set back for the JD(U)-BJP alliance, which went to the hustings for the first time after Nitish Kumar returned to the NDA fold.
In small consolation for the BJP, its candidate Rinki Rani Pandey retained the Bhabhua Assembly seat for the party, defeating her Congress rival Shambhu Singh Patel by about 14,000 votes.
The RJD retained the Jehanabad Assembly seat, with its nominee Suday Yadav defeating his JD(U) rival Abhiram Sharma by more than 30,000 votes.
Buffeted by the surprise defeat, Adityanath attributed it to “overconfidence” of the party and called for an in-depth analysis of the causes.
“We failed to understand the implications of this alliance between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party that are as different as chalk and cheese in the middle of the elections as part of bargain for the Rajya Sabha elections,” he said. The SP is backing BSP candidate for the coming Rajya Sabha polls in the state.
The SP’s victory reminded many of the triumph of the now defunct JD(U)-RJD-Congress Grand Alliance in Bihar which had trounced the BJP-led NDA in 2015. The victory was attributed to the consolidation of OBC and Muslim voters in favour of the Grand alliance after the two major parties–JD(U) and RJD came together.
In Uttar Pradesh, besides the BJP, the SP and BSP are major protagonists in the political arena. The SP and BSP had formed a coalition government in the state in 1993 when the BJP, despite emerging as the single largest party following the demolition of the Babri mosque, failed to get a majority.
In Gorakhpur, a consolidation of OBC-Dalit-Muslim votes, which used to get split between the SP and BSP, besides the support of smaller entities like the Nishad Party and Peace Party, worked wonders for the Samajwadi Party candidates.
The Nishad Party holds considerable influence over the fisherfolk community in the belt, while the Peace Party is a force to reckon with among Muslims in the area.
