Tehran, Mar 16 ,2020: Iran has postponed the second round of the country’s parliamentary elections in order to fight against the rapidly escalating global coronavirus pandemic.
The polls, originally slated for April 17, will be held on Sept 11, Abbasali Kadkhodaei, a spokesman for the Guardian Council of Constitution announced on Sunday, reported IRNA news agency.
The 11th parliamentary elections were held on Feb 21 in Iran. According to Iranian Ministry of Internal Affairs, a total of 24.512 million people, about 42.57 percent, participated in the elections.
The number of participants in the first round of vote displayed a significant drop of voters compared to the previous election. The 2016 parliamentary election in Iran saw 62 percent turnout.
In the capital Tehran, only 26.2 percent of eligible people attended the ballot boxes.
Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education announced on Sunday that novel coronavirus has affected 13,938 people of whom 724 people have died.
Iran declared the first cases of infection with the COVID-19 in the central city of Qom on Feb 19.
After emerging in Wuhan, China last December, the virus known as COVID-19 has spread to at least 141 countries and territories.
The global death toll from the virus has surpassed 5,700 with more than 152,000 cases confirmed worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.
Mar16,2020:Israel’s president on Sunday tapped ex-military chief Benny Gantz to form a government, calling for an end to a year of political stalemate to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
Reuven Rivlin’s announcement marked a setback for right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but did not necessarily spell the end of his tenure, the longest in Israeli history.
Gantz on Sunday secured recommendations to lead a government from 61 lawmakers in the 120-seat Knesset, or parliament, in the wake of a March 2 election — the third national poll in less than a year.
“Tomorrow, around midday, the president will assign the task of forming the government to (the) head of Kachol Lavan… Benny Gantz,” Rivlin’s office said in a statement Sunday, using the Hebrew name for Gantz’s centrist Blue and White party.
But there is no guarantee that the disparate forces who supported Gantz on Sunday will agree terms on a stable coalition, something that proved impossible following the two inconclusive elections last year.
Driven by the need to ensure a coherent policy response to the coronavirus pandemic, Rivlin therefore appears to be simultaneously pursuing a stop-gap option — an interim unity administration involving both Gantz and Netanyahu.
He summoned the two rivals to a meeting on Sunday evening for an “urgent conversation”, which ended without agreement, but Likud and Blue and White said in a joint-statement the talks will continue on Monday.
The president emphasised the need to “intensify direct contacts.. between the Likud and Kachol Lavan negotiating teams, and welcomed both sides’ willingness to do so”, according to a statement by his own office after Sunday night’s initial meeting.

Mar 10,2020:The Canadian government on Monday announced a bill to ban so-called “conversion therapy,” which tries to change the sexual orientation of young LGBT people.
The bill would create five new offenses in the Canadian criminal code, including prohibiting subjecting a minor to the practice, either in Canada or abroad.
An adult would also not be able to undergo conversion therapy against his or her will, and no one would be allowed to profit from or advertise it.
If the bill passes, Canada’s laws on conversion therapy would become some of the “most progressive and comprehensive in the world,” David Lametti, the minister of justice, told reporters while presenting the bill to parliament.
Two adults who had been forced to undergo conversion therapy in childhood testified on about their experiences.
“I’m a survivor of conversion therapy,” said Erika, a trans woman.
“My body is a prison because of what my conversion therapist did to me, and I live with that every day,” she said in a vehement denunciation of the practice.
The bill’s adoption by parliament appears all but assured, even though Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is the minority in the House of Commons. The left-wing New Democratic Party has already announced it intends to back the bill.
The bill states that conversion therapy causes harm not only to the victims but also to society, particularly because the practice is founded on and helps spread myths and stereotypes about sexual orientation and gender identity, including the myth that sexual orientation and gender identity can and should be changed.
The law would define conversion therapy as “any service, practice or treatment designed to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual, gender identity to one that matches the sex assigned at birth, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behaviors.”
According to a recent official survey, 47,000 Canadian men who identify as part of a minority sexuality group had been subjected to conversion therapy.
